Earlier today, Apple released iTunes 12 to developers with a new design to fit in with OS X Yosemite. We’ve taken a look at the new player and below is a gallery of what end-users can expect to see come fall:

Don’t like it. There’re many left over elements from the previous version that do not fit in the current design language. Hopefully they will be eventually changed……
I agree. It looks like new paint on the old version with a worse (IMHO) version of the navigation bar at the top left. TBH it looks more confusing to use than the previous version (which I don’t think is that great anyway).
Dear god, fix that icon. No two eighth notes should ever look like that.
Don’t like it. There’re many left over elements (e.g. Update strip, arrow border, store interface) from the previous version that do not fit in the current design language. Hopefully they will be eventually changed……
So there’s a user listed on the top right. What’s that about? Different iTunes settings for the same User account in Yosemite?
Apple needs to make Radio more like Spotify.
Can we just have SoundJam back, please?
I pray the sidebar is still an option to display. I love me that sidebar.
Unfortunately, it is gone … at least for now :-(
No it’s not. Obviously most people rising to criticize iTunes never bother to spend more than 10 seconds using it.
Okay sarcastic a$$hole “freediverx” … how do you enable it? I did spend more than 10 seconds using it, and I did not criticize iTunes. I stated a fact. In iTunes 11, I enable the side-bar by clicking View –> Show/Hide Sidebar. In my installed version of iTunes 12, there is no option to show the sidebar.
My bad. I thought you were referring to the bar that appears on the left when displaying music by artist or genre, etc.
In the top bar “My Music, Playlists, Match etc” press “Playlists”.
I agree — a desktop app on a wide-screen display can have a three-column display… The desktop does not have to be like an iPad.
Hi there… I found a work around. Click on the music icon on the left. Then click on playlists option in the middle and then finally I clicked on the view option on the far right and chose “song list” to display it in my personal preferred view.
This redesign is not very ambitious, visually speaking.
Maybe this release will focus on performance and media management.
1) They’ve rethought the primary navigation, replacing the list control with menu bar icons exposing all the available content types.
2) This primary toolbar is customizable, allowing users to control which content types are displayed in the toolbar.
3) They’ve also provided more convenient access to your account right on the tool bar, no longer requiring you to first navigate to the attains Store.
4) The app also feels faster.
Don’t care what it looks like…how does it run?
Feels snappier.
They still need to update the actual store, clearly.
People still use iTunes on the desktop?
I’ll give you three guesses.
Huh? What else is there? iTunes is a trillion times better than anything else available.
Nope. Spotify is better. Although not entirely comparable the app offers a better UI and service to many.
Does spotify let you watch movies, play TV shows, podcasts, and let me download apps, read song lyrics? Thats a poor/stupid comparison.
Please tell me the good old simple tracks list is still there!
Running it right now, and I’m sorry to say, but it’s as terrible as it looks. No improvement at all.
They redesigned the calculator
What’s it look like the Clock?
iTunes is in more of a need of a redesign then iPhoto is. The icon is confusing using a rounded version of the iOS icon. I’m just glad they don’t have a bunch of standalone apps like iOS. Don’t need music playing app, video playing app, music store, App Store, podcasts, and remot app.
Apple needs one streamlined app for both OSX and iOS. I can see keeping the App Store separate for iOS. I like the UI of the iRadio part of th music app and the UI of the music store in iOS and wish iTunes would blend and use those ui’s.
We need a modern iTunes. Still needs better backup and syncing for iOS devices if you ant to do that.
Is there going to be a health app for the Mac? Or will the data sun to iTunes?
No. iOS should definitely have separated apps for music/store/movies/etc. sorry to tell you.
Why not be able to buy music in the music app or play podcast in the music app? Why does the remote app need to be separate from the music app? The App Store being a separate app is the on,y one that makes since as a a separate app. Depending with what that do with iRadio and Beats music there could be 7 apps for music and media. There is currently 6.
Agreed or they should at least rename iTunes to something that more covers the broad range of media.
I don’t really care how it looks as long as they improve the functionality.
Pssst hey. This is a beta release, not the final version. Stop whining.
this
agreed. knee-jerk reactions to beta software are really annoying
Ugh… that looks awfully like it’s yet another paint-over that just masks the underlying problems instead of actually doing it like it is on iOS, where it actually feels more organized and less overwhelming.
This design is terrible. Everything looks mushed together as if design was completely rushed.
My fear as always is that this new version of iTunes is going to cut off another OS X version from its compatibility list. I am really hoping that it will still support 10.6 as I use my core dual Mac mini as my TV media centre.
At least they did introduce a version of iTunes 11 that supports Family sharing.
Not sure I’m a fan of the red iTunes icon. The colour red has a lot of negative connotations in some cultures, then again positive ones it others. But still to me seems a bit harsh of a colour. Maybe it is just because it is a beta version.
I too want to have the sidebar on. With the recent iTunes 11 with the Family sharing, I’ll likely hold out for a few sub versions.
We’ll see…
I like itunes but it’s so bad on windows that ironically it’s one of the reasons I’m switching to a mac.
Does anyone else notice significantly better audio quality for iTunes Match & Radio?
I really wish they would follow suit with “Photos” and kill of iTunes as we know it. Replace it with separate, Music, Videos and iTunes (Store) apps. We already have App Store and iBooks, so split the rest. iTunes is a mess now.
How to show the previews songs as played on iTunes stores like in iTunes 11 ?
I am not sure if there is a full screen view of iTunes in those screens.
Perhaps they are out of help to design a full scale OS & apps (unlike iOS), but please do not release a software that is half baked. Its diluting Apples legendary UI skills that have made apple what it is today. Previous leadership never allowed for half baked visual enhancement to be released.
This might look good on a retina display, but on normal display this UI sucks.
*Shudders*
The UI is apalling and so counter intuitive. Its a complex collection of apps, made more difficult by the crazy way it allows iphone apps to upload / download content and the removal of iBooks to a separate app (FAIL)
It took me 15 minutes and 20 failed google searches to work out how to get content from my iPhone – read U2 album onto my mac, the copy purchased content is hidden 3 steps from the main UI.
It so badly needs a thorough overhaul to make it simple clean and elegant.
It feels like a collection of apps strung together by a poorly ill considered designer
Does anyone know who’s beta testing Yosemite – where in the world Apple moved the email account settings that use to show up when your iPhone was connected to iTunes? What a horrible new UI.
red is a color of warning, error…. what that means? warning do not use iTunes…. there is an error with it.
I want you dead and all of you shitty developers for unleashing such an atrocious piece of shit unto the world!
