Apple has just officially announced its annual Worldwide Developers Conference for this year. The conference will take place in San Francisco as usual in early June. WWDC will officially kick off on June 8th and run through June 12th. Developers interested in attending the conference can apply for tickets starting today with applications open through Friday at 10 am PT/1 pm ET.
Like last year, available tickets will be distributed at random to a portion of applicants due to size constraints of the venue, Moscone West, although Apple says select sessions will actually be streamed live while most sessions will be available online after each day. Apple will announce ticket availability after the random selection process on Monday, April 20th, at 5 pm PT/8 pm ET.
Apple’s WWDC opening keynote serves as the unveiling stage for the next versions of iOS and OS X. Apple’s press release for the conference (below) teases the announcement of “the future of iOS and OS X” as we would expect.
Earlier this year, 9to5Mac reported that Apple will unveil iOS 9 later this year with a focus on performance improvements and overall stability as Apple moves to address recent quality control issues rather than foundational features.
In addition to iOS 9 expected to be previewed at WWDC and released later this fall, Apple is continuing to push iOS 8 development further with the all-new Music app with a redesigned iTunes Radio experience in iOS 8.4. Apple is expected to unveil its Beats Music-based subscription music service at the conference as well as potentially announcing a new Web TV service for Apple TV.
Apple may also reveal the Watch SDK for making native apps for the Apple Watch rather than the current collection of WatchKit apps which run on the iPhone and project information to the wearable.
Tickets cost $1599 for attendees this year while 350 scholarships will be awarded to student developers and participating STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) organization members.

No surprises in the design here. Small circles for Apple Watch, small rounded squares for iPhone, large circles for OS X and hopefully large rounded squares for AppleTV?
Cue people saying the center shape is a hint at the new tv
Small circles for Apple Watch? The Apple Watch isn’t circle though…
But the app icons on Watch are…
I didn’t think of it earlier today, but Apple may just release a “killer app” for the Watch that relates to a new TV. Voice activated content selection. Spoken word searches. I foresee an Ive video where he says “If you start by accepting a keyboard while sitting in front of your Telly, you’ve already failed.”
I think all those sensors in the Apple Watch could easily be used like a magic wand (think Wii) with AppleTV. Even in a Kinect-like way (since Apple bought the company behind the tech). Which could be why we’re only now seeing updates to AppleTV, with apps (for gaming and home automation). The epicenter. All the pieces in the puzzle coming together. Or not.
I think it’s more focuses to the operating systems than to the devices; like iOS, Watch OS, OS X and Apple TV OS.
Really cool. Hope we get a glimps into the Watch OS roadmap and how it will impact the future of iOS.
Hopefully the new apple tv gets revealed
I don’t think there will ever be an actual TV. It just doesn’t make sense for Apple. The screen is a commodity at this point and one that Apple isn’t eager to provide technical support for. They’ll make boxes that connect to other people’s TVs. Nobody wants to see a dude at the Genius Bar troubleshooting his 60″ TV.
I didn’t mean an actual television
They’ll make? They are making “boxes that connect to other people’s TVs”… It’s called Apple TV. And because of recent events with standalone TV programming, rumor has it, a new Apple TV might come out.
Yes PinkAppleEatr, all my comments were in the context of knowing they already make an Apple TV and that a new model may be coming out. I mentioned the lack of an actual flatscreen TV set because I feel like some of the boxes represented in the teaser art would have a 16:9 aspect ratio if they actually planned to release a flat-screen TV (as many have rumored these past few years.)
I don’t think they’ll ever make an integrated TV set, however, I believe they could introduce a new line of larger Cinema Displays which would act as entertainment displays for which you’d connect your Apple TV to. Just the bare bones display and make it the best looking display with the thinnest bezels and thinnest hardware possible. This way customers that choose to spend the large amount of money it would cost, could have an apple display for entertainment, and the Apple TV hooked up to it for all of the computing/entertainment.
The new unified operating system will be called “Watch iOSX TV.”
Why no OS? All the current operating systems get updated versions released at the same time, and work well together, why not converge them? They’re all (allegedly) the same code-base anyway, right?
PS I’m NOT talking about how MS has 1 OS that looks and feels the same across all devices, because let’s face it that’s just dumb.
That design and headline is screaming “full blown iOS for Apple TV” device. It also says to me, “we’re not going to sell an actual TV set.” It wouldn’t surprise me to see it come with an serious remote controller upgrade. Lots of things made possible with an A9 chip and fast communication protocols.
Looks like an Apple TV at the center of the graphic…. can’t wait!
It was just yesterday when I was thinking when the WWDC will this year be and today, we have an announcement. So excited.
“Epicenter” is there for a reason. I think Apple Tv will be the new Apple Hub: home automation, tv, etc. Controllable via Apple Watch and iOS devices
That is most certainly an TV in the center of the graphic. I 100% agree with this.
I also think this might mean that it has a built in router. Easier remote controlling so it doesn’t lag with WiFi remotes! Also Airplay Mirroring would improve drastically.
The shape at the middle is exactly the same as the shape at the middle of last year’s, which can been in the related articles at the bottom of this one announcing 2013’s keynote date. There was no new Apple TV then, as far as I recall – just a refresh. Maybe there will be a new Apple TV this year, maybe there won’t – but if there is, there’s no way to tell from this year’s icon. You’re kind of seeing what you want to see!
The 2013 and 2014 logos used rounded recs too. I don’t think it really means anything.
Organizing a party around WWDC 2015? Let me know and I will add you to the Parties for WWDC app! @genadyo
Was really hoping it would be June 1 since thats a holiday for me…oh well still excited.
The “epicenter” of change?
Epicenter:
1. “the point on the earth’s surface vertically above the focus of an earthquake.”
2. “the central point of something, typically a difficult or unpleasant situation.”
…are we still hoping ios 9 is just refinements and performance?
What also stands out is the weird use of drop shadows but that doesn’t really have to do with anything. Just think it could have looked good flat.
I’m also intrigued by the drop shadows because if I remember correctly they haven’t used those at all recently since making iOS flat. Plus the reflections on the edges of the app icons. That’s ornamentation that they’ve been getting rid of or greatly reducing.
Look at the font, is Helvetica Neue changing to the new Watch font? Could we possibly see new themes for iOS9?
iOS + OS X = Apple OS
Close… OS
doesn’t it kind of look like a snowflake? integration with Nest competitor? Fits in with smart hub and eco friendly ideas.
i hope its an updated 15 inch retina Macbook pro just in time for collage XD
From this sentence alone I know the statement is a lie. You’re not going to “collage”.
Looking forward to seeing what they’ve been up to. I think they should give tickets away though, considering everyone there is working towards making them more money. That and, you know, having billions in the bank.
Exciting times!
Although I prefer Android at the moment as a person who admires tech in general I am interested to see what Apple brings with ios 9, I would like to see some kind of capability to customize your homescreen even if its just a little I mean is placing icons where I like too much to ask?
TV speculations aside, I’m just staring in designer joy at the logo itself.
I’m really confused by this announcement.
What we expected thus far: system optimizations and very few new features.
What Apple tells us: “The epicenter of change”.
That’s not just a stark contrast, it really implies something big is coming.
Apple TV? Why so much excitement about that product? I can’t see how it’s the center of anything.
