Elgato’s smart home devices now available for pre-order as HomeKit officially starts shipping

Elgato has announced pricing for its range of HomeKit-compatible smart home devices, and made them available for pre-order. Sources told us last week that the first HomeKit devices would go on sale this week, but with no indication of delivery times, Elgato doesn’t appear to be one of the roughly five companies expected to begin shipping later today.

Elgato first announced last September that it would be making HomeKit devices, and has now revealed pricing on four products, ranging from door/window sensors for $39.95 to a room sensor – measuring temperature, humidity and air quality – for $79.95 …

The four products are shown on Elgato’s website, with pre-sales available via the company’s Amazon store. The four products are:

  • Eve room – indoor temperature, humidity and air quality sensor
  • Eve weather – outside temperature, humidity and air pressure
  • Eve door & window – detects whether windows and doors are open or closed
  • Eve energy – switches electrically-powered devices on & off, and measures energy usage

Eve energy is currently only available in Europe.

HomeKit, which allows smart home devices to be controlled by Siri or a single integrated app, was first announced by Apple last year, with Apple-certified chips sent to manufacturers and the company accepting MFi applications in November.

Wow, first time that Europeans are being put first. Wish to see that Phillips Hue can be updated with a software update to HomeKit, just simply by saying to Siri please turn my lights on or off.

Since EVE connects via Bluetooth directly to your iPhone, will Eve energy switch only work when you’re at home or will it connect to WiFi so I can use it out of the house?

“Eve requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8.3 or later. HomeKit requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8.1 or later. Controlling HomeKit-enabled accessories away from home requires an Apple TV (3rd generation or later) with Apple TV software 7.0 or later and an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8.1 or later.”

From their Website. So you need an Apple TV to control your devices when not at home.

So if you were to put something, like say, the outdoor weather one, it would need to be in Bluetooth range of your nearest Apple TV? Interesting.

So, I guess there is no local storage for data… meaning, i’d like to see 12 months worth of temperatures, etc.. (for example). But not only for the 1 device… I might have all windows and rooms “EVE’d” so to speak… is that stored in the cloud? or in my iPhone/AppleTV?

Why are european sockets so freakin huge? I’ve never understood this…

Short answer: 230v and huge wattage capacities. It’s overkill for most domestic use, but that’s the reason.
