When OS X 10.10.4 betas dropped discoveryd a couple of weeks ago before iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 were announced, there was some speculation about whether it was just a temporary intermediate fix until Apple reworks discoveryd for the next generation operating systems. Using Xcode’s Instruments developer tools for iOS and Activity Monitor on the Mac, we can confirm that Apple has also dropped discoveryd on iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 El Capitan.

In both cases, mDNSResponder has been substituted in again, although the internal nature of the process makes it impossible to see whether it has changed at all since the build of OS X 10.10.4. The infamous discoveryd has been blamed for many networking and communication stability issues. One way Apple has achieved this is to get rid of discoveryd completely.
There is still a chance that it will return at a later date when Apple has fixed up the coding, perhaps in a later beta seed or future revisions of the platforms. For now though, users should expect to see the WiFi problems, seemingly solely caused by discoveryd misbehaving, go away.

Good riddance. Discoveryd is the lone reason I reboot my machine anymore (outside of mandatory reboot requirements from app installs or updates). But stability wise, it’s the only thing I can’t force quit to get working again. I used to have my machine up for a minimum 30 days until that POS came along.
Opening a terminal and typing “sudo killall discoveryd” will usually fix things up when my Air loses connectivity after waking from sleep. Happens about every 3rd time it wakes up lately. It’s annoying, but faster than rebooting.

Thx for the Terminal tip. I usually disconnect from the network, reconnect and then reload the page.
Does anyone know if this discovryd trash is in the AppleTV OS? I’m assuming it is since it’s a version of iOS.
My guess would be it’s not but after Googling it I don’t know cause I couldn’t find any info on that. Try resetting your AppleTV that fix some AirPlay issues I had a while back and I was blaming my iPhone and Mac wrongly.
From the stability issues I have with ATV waking from sleep mode I would say the symptoms are similar and I would say its more than likely.
