Apple Pay in Australia expands to support ANZ following initial American Express launch

Update: ANZ has an amusing TV ad promoting the launch, embedded below.

After expanding to Singapore earlier this year and to a handful of new United States banks and credit unions earlier this month, Apple Pay is now available to ANZ customers in Australia. First reported by EFTM, this rollout makes ANZ the first bank in Australia to add support for Apple Pay following the American Express exclusive launch last year.

Starting today, ANZ customers in Australia can add their credit cards to Apple Pay. Users can do so by opening the Wallet app on their iPhone and tapping the ‘+’ icon in the top right corner to begin. iOS will then guide users through the rest of the processor. For Apple Watch payments, users can head into the Apple Watch app on iPhone and select the ‘Add Credit or Debit Card’ option from the ‘Wallet & Apple Pay’ section.

Apple Pay is supported on the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, Apple Watch, iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2, and both iPad Pro models.

Speaking during the company’s Q2 2016 earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that Apple Pay has grown 5x compared to where it was a year ago, while adding that the service adds approximately 1 million new users per day. Earlier this month, Apple Pay expanded to over 50 new banks and credit unions in the United States, as well.

Apple Pay’s expansion around the global is expected to continue following successful launches in countries like Singapore and China. A purported MasterCard roadmap earlier this year hinted that the service would come to Japan, Brazil, and Hong Kong by the end of this year.

This is the most important Apple product since the introduction of the iPhone. I love seeing it grow into a universal system.

Though this is absolutely fantastic news, I do wish these types of things wouldn’t always hit ANZ Bank first.

Hopefully this is the tipping point. Normally once one does something the others aren’t far behind.
