Original PowerMac G5/Mac Pro cases turned into stylish benches

The original PowerMac G5/Mac Pro is still, to me, one of the most beautiful machines Apple has ever made. The machine itself may be of limited use these days, but a British designer has found a cool new use for the case …

The designer, who goes by the initials GTO, turned two of them into a bench by adding a slab of American Black Walnut. Having made one for himself, friends asked him to make others for them, and he’s now offering them for sale.

Each bench is made to order, the lead time is currently 6 weeks. This is to ensure we can source G5 cases in the best possible condition. Please note, the G5 Mac Pro 1st Generation was last produced in 2012, we endeavour to find immaculate models, however there may be small signs of wear present.

The price is rather eye-watering, at £1,995 ($2,555) – with shipping and import taxes extra for US orders. They do, though, look beautifully made.

If you’re handy and want to make your own, you can pick up G5/Mac Pro cases on eBay for around the $100-150 mark. If you do, be sure to share photos in the comments – we’d love to see them. It’s not the first time someone has turned the cases into furniture.

We’re currently waiting to see what Apple has lined-up for its upcoming modular Mac Pro, but some have imagined something based on the G5 design. The company first promised the machine 18 months ago, but all we know so far on timing is that it will be available sometime next year.
