Apple decides to launch Apple Pay Later now, no longer ‘early access’

Remember Apple Pay Later, the belatedly released iOS 16 service? It’s now available for all iPhone users in the United States.

Apple Pay Later was first announced in June 2022. Apple planned to enter the BNPL (buy now, pay later) market that Affirm, Klarna, and others popularized by the end of last year. Instead, the service soft launched at the end of March as an “early access” staggered release.

The service is simple. Qualified buyers can break down a purchase into four equal payments. The initial payment is due at purchase, followed by another payment every 14 days over six weeks. Apple charges no interest on qualified transactions.

So what’s new today? Not much. If you’re an iPhone user in the U.S. and you haven’t seen Apple Pay Later, you should now. The service is offered on Apple Pay transactions and is separate from Apple Card.

Apple is promoting Apple Pay Later on Apple.com as well.

In other official Apple news today, the company has not yet released iOS 17.1 as was expected and has announced an evening Mac event that was not expected.
