I’ve been a Ubiquiti advocate for the past 5-6 years for the vast majority of enterprise networking installations. It’s not going to be the perfect fit for all installations. Still, I believe that it covers 95% of the networking needs of most organizations outside of data centers and very demanding environments. One of the negatives of Ubiquiti for many users was the focus on email and forum-based support. For mission-critical environments, 24/7 support is needed. Ubiquiti recently eliminated that issue as they now offer 24/7 phone support as an additional tier.

About Apple @ Work: Bradley Chambers managed an enterprise IT network from 2009 to 2021. Through his experience deploying and managing firewalls, switches, a mobile device management system, enterprise grade Wi-Fi, 1000s of Macs, and 1000s of iPads, Bradley will highlight ways in which Apple IT managers deploy Apple devices, build networks to support them, train users, stories from the trenches of IT management, and ways Apple could improve its products for IT departments.

Moving up is easier than moving down

Ubiquiti has been on a tear in recent years with new products and enhancements, but they’ve been around for over 20 years. The company was founded by Robert Pera, who previously worked at Apple. While he was at Apple, Robert tested Wi-Fi-based products to ensure they were within the with Federal Communications Commission standards for electromagnetic emissions. Pera found out that that the power sources that Apple’s Wi-Fi devices used to send signals were below FCC limits. Robert thought that boosting their power would increase their range to help reach areas that traditional ISPs didn’t cover. His managers at Apple ignored the idea. He decided to build is own product. After spending a few years working on it during nights and weekends, he set out on his own and formed Ubiquiti.

For a very long time, Ubiquiti has been focused on offering products in the tier between consumer and enterprise. They were playing the long game, though. As more and more of the core functionality of switching, firewalls, and networking moves into the chipsets, the software solutions many large vendors charge a lot of money for are no longer differentiators. Those features are available to anyone using the common chipsets of the major manufacturers.

This transition has allowed Ubiquiti to move up the market in terms of features and hardware it offers at prices many of the major vendors cannot match. It’s way easier for someone like Ubiquiti to move into more premium hardware and services than it is for a legacy vendor to move down the market to offer lower-cost items.

What’s included in Site Support from Ubiquiti?

Ubiquiti’s newly introduced UniFi Site Support service brings priority phone support to a single physical site managed with a UniFi Cloud Gateway for the first time. This service is set to expand, covering various types of UniFi site deployments in the future.

Your professional Site Support team consists of expert network engineers who are specially trained to architect, install, and operate large-scale Ubiquiti deployments. Whether your network is a small office or a large campus, Ubiquiti’s engineers are equipped to handle all challenges, ensuring your

Standard site support phone hours are 9:00 – 5:00 CST, but there is an upgraded tier 24-hour phone support coverage that offers rapid, high-touch assistance whenever you need it.

You’ll work with a dedicated member of Ubiquiti’s Professional Site Support team. This named single contact will become familiar with your UniFi deployment’s configuration history, enabling efficient problem-solving without having to restart the explanation of your network over again each time. This single point of contact approach speeds up fixing problems and enhances the overall support experience.

Wrap up on Ubiquiti’s Site Support

Ubiquiti’s Professional Site Support is an optional service designed for those who seek an extra layer of support, but the existing chat and 24/7 email support services continue to be available free of charge without needing any license.

Again, this isn’t Ubiquiti looking to squeeze revenue from people who were attracted to their products for the lowest cost, but recognizing that for some organizations and use cases, 24/7 phone support is worth paying for.

Pricing:

  • Business hours phone support: $1500/site/year or $3800/site for three years
  • 24 hour phone support: $2500/site/year or $6000/site for three year
