Apple Music and TikTok are teaming up two new features for the short-form video app. First, the companies are beta testing the ability to play a full song in the TikTok app using Apple Music. The two are also working on a Listening Party feature, allowing fans to listen to their favorite music together.
New Apple Music + TikTok feature
The new “Play Full Song” feature is based on Apple’s MusicKit framework, which allows developers to integrate Apple Music into their own applications.
The idea behind this new feature is that it will make it easier for TikTok users to discover new music, and immediately start listening to that music without leaving the TikTok app. An Apple Music subscription is required for this feature.
Apple Music is still the source of the music and there is a clear “From Apple Music” label on playback in the TikTok app. This also means that Apple Music is still the one paying the royalties and managing the licensing for all of the music.
Second, TikTok and Apple are beta testing a new Listening Party feature, a source tells 9to5Mac. This feature will let fans listen to music together in a community environment. It sounds like a modernized version of the now-defunct Turntable.fm service, which let users collaboratively stream music.
Both of these features are currently being beta tested by TikTok and Apple Music, so they aren’t available for everyone yet.
This isn’t the first time Apple and TikTok have collaborated. In 2023, TikTok added the ability to quickly save songs discovered in the app to your Apple Music library. In 2024, Apple Music added support for sharing a song from the Music app to TikTok.
Apple Music is also offering a free three-month trial right now, available until February 24.
