Speculation about Tim Cook’s retirement date intensified when he turned 65 in November of last year, and this was quickly followed by Apple testing the waters for John Ternus as his replacement this year.
That test went very well indeed, with the company last month laying further groundwork for yesterday’s announcement …
Ternus has a lot of things going for him, both within Apple and outside the company. Internally, he is said to be well-liked and respected as a manager, as well as decisive.
Investors appear to be happy with Ternus reputedly having a somewhat conservative attitude to risk while at the same time not being afraid to shake things up a little. The development and launch of the MacBook Neo at an unprecedented price point was a good example of this. This was made possible by some creative approaches to the hardware design, and it was Ternus rather than Cook who did the big reveal.
At the same time, Apple fans who complained about Cook being a bean counter rather than an innovator should be happy with a replacement who is a hardware guy through and through.
