New iPhone screen sizes are launching this fall, here’s what’s coming

It’s not often that Apple debuts new iPhone screen sizes, but this fall the iPhone Ultra will introduce two displays in shapes and sizes never before used in iPhone. Here’s what to expect.

iPhone Ultra to introduce two new screen shapes and sizes

iPhone Ultra’s inner screen will be similar to the iPad mini (pictured)

Apple’s iPhone lineup has offered mostly the same variety of screen sizes for years.

There have been slight variations, but for the most part recent iPhones have come in two main sizes: a 6.1-6.3-inch option, and a larger 6.7-6.9-inch version.

This year with the iPhone Ultra though, we’re getting two brand new iPhone screen sizes that differ drastically from what’s come before.

Rumors for iPhone Ultra include these screen sizes:

  • ~5.3-inch outer display
  • ~7.6-inch inner display

Both options mark a departure from recent iPhone displays.

The outer screen will be significantly smaller than we’re used to, while the inner screen is larger than an iPhone 17 Pro Max.

iPhone Ultra will be shorter than other modern iPhones, and it will also be wider. This could make for an especially unique look and feel compared to every iPhone that’s come before it.

How will iOS and apps adapt to the new screen shapes and sizes? We’ll have to wait until September to find out.

But based on what we’ve seen in the iOS 27 beta already, Apple is prioritizing having iPhone apps now support landscape mode. Expect to see third-party apps follow suit so as to make good use of that larger, iPad mini-like inner display.
