Formula 1 on Apple TV is getting Dolby Atmos, starting this month

Beginning with the U.S. Grand Prix weekend on Friday, October 23, Apple TV will offer Formula 1 coverage in Dolby Atmos on supported devices. Here are the details.

’Bringing exceptional picture and sound together to capture the full intensity of the sport’

Apple and Dolby Laboratories announced a new partnership to bring Dolby Atmos to Apple TV’s live Formula 1 coverage, starting with the U.S. Grand Prix weekend, which begins October 23 in Austin, Texas.

Apple says Dolby Atmos will join “Dolby Vision to deliver an even more immersive viewing experience,” putting “fans at the heart of the action, surrounding them with the energy, drama, and emotion of Formula 1.”

From team radio communications and race commentary to the roar of the engines, on-track battles, and the intensity of the pit lane, Dolby Atmos brings the unmistakable sounds that define the sport to life.

Here’s Oliver Schusser, Vice President of Apple Music and International Content at Apple, on the announcement:

“We’re always looking for new ways to make Formula 1 on Apple TV even better for fans. […] The sound of Formula 1 is such an important part of what makes the sport so exciting, and with Dolby Atmos joining Dolby Vision, fans can experience the energy and intensity of every Grand Prix in a whole new way. It’s another example of how we’re continuing to innovate across the viewing experience to bring fans closer to the action.”

It’s worth noting that Apple TV’s streaming rights for Formula 1 still include only the U.S., but don’t require an extra subscription on top of the Apple TV subscription.

Apple recently made the Bahrain Grand Prix available to stream for free in the U.S., and has also partnered with Netflix to bring Formula 1: Drive to Survive Season 8 to Apple TV in the U.S. As part of the same collaboration, the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix was streamed live on both Apple TV and Netflix in the U.S.

Apple secured the U.S. streaming rights to Formula 1 in 2025 as part of a five-year deal beginning with the 2026 season, and has previously indicated it wants to expand its F1 coverage into additional markets.

Apple’s broader relationship with Formula 1 also includes “F1: The Movie,” which won the Academy Award for Best Sound earlier this year and remains Apple’s biggest theatrical success to date.

Apple TV is available for $14.99 per month or as part of the Apple One bundle. It features hit TV shows and movies like Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo.
