Apple woes continue: Some reporting iCloud down across iOS, Mac, and web

Update: Apple says all is good.

It was less than an hour ago that we told you about a newly-discovered bug within iOS that could potentially delete your iWork files. But now, according to a variety of internet reports, Apple’s month of misadventure continues as iCloud is currently experiencing an outage of some kind. Most notably, it seems as if many are being prompted over and over to enter their iCloud credentials within iOS. Apple has acknowledged the outage on its system status page:

It seems as if the outage is widespread and confined to some unknown specific subset of users. While some are reporting that the service is working perfectly fine (myself included), it appears as if all of iCloud across iOS, Mac, and iCloud.com are completely down for others.

    Working fine for me but I’d really like to upgrade to Yosemite already and be done with it. You can’t use iCloud.com to access your Numbers, Pages or Keynote files unless you set up iCloud Drive. And you need Yosemite and iOS8 for complete access to all of your docs at iCloud.com if you set up iCloud Drive.

    • I thought that also, but upgraded to iCloud Drive on my iMac while running Mavericks 10.9.5 and have both iPad and iPhone 6 running iOS 8. I have access to all my Numbers, Pages & Keynote files on all 3 devices even though I got the same warnings. Not sure if its true for others and maybe I just got lucky!

        Hmmm…tempting! I s’pose I could pull the trigger and “upgrade” then just be satisfied accessing the docs on my iPhone 6 and iPad (both on iOS8) until Yosemite. I’m curious now…

        OK, @MoBill, I pulled the trigger and updated to iCloud Drive at iCloud.com and, yes, you are correct, I can still edit and save my docs while using my MBP running Mavericks 10.9.5! I did get a scare, though, after I updated on my iPhone 6. I went to Numbers and it said – “No Documents”!!! Yikes! But after a couple seconds the docs showed up and are syncing.

        FWIW, of course ;-)

    • Glad I could help and yes I had the same scare when opening up my Numbers and Pages on iPad and iPhone. They eventually filled in and I was happy! iClound is back up for me know, so happy about that too!

    Lived through so many alleged widespread iCloud server downtime and I’m finally experiencing it myself for the first time. I don’t like it. Really don’t like it.

    Apple’s status page shows that about ⅓ of their services are down for some users.

    Mail and iCloud services down

    “There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “iCloud” or try again.”

  9. “Apple has yet to acknowledge the outage.” <——This. My friend always brags that iCloud almost never goes down and sends me to their website for proof. Well, I'm experiencing it, everything is down, and their site says everything is fine. This is why I still use gmail for contacts and calendars.

      I have Gmail outages ALL the time. WAY WAY more often than iCloud goes down. I have 5 separate accounts on Gmail (personal, work, project work etc) and they all fail at the same time so it can’t simply be a case of one particular account being unlucky.

      • I’ve never had a problem sending an email for more than a minute or two in the last 7 years of using gmail. Ever. Maybe I’ve just been lucky.

      Google it’s a really poor choice for storing any data of any kind.

      Google services, especially gmail, go down daily. There are no articles about it… With IMAP instead of push, people have no idea they’re not working.

      • Hmm. So you’d rather use Apple services and have your work flow shut down for hours at a time, like today (over an hour for me), rather than use gmail services and keep working because the service shutdown didn’t stop you from being able to work?

        You’re not making a good argument for Apple services.

    It went down while I was using it to upload docs to my Pages account using ICloud Drive.

    Doesn’t this indicate that Apple is working on the file deletion problem? They probably had the folks in North Carolina restart a bunch of servers.

  13. I first noticed this problem when iCloud mail went down for me about an hour and a half ago.

    Heads up: the System Status page over at Apple now lists Documents in the Cloud and Photos down as well, whereas it didn’t a few minutes ago.

    Email and calendar appear to be down for me. Everything else seems fine, though it is late here (1am) so I can just sleep it off lol.

    On a more positive note this has given me the extra nudge I needed to change my iCloud password. I was using the same one for years like an idiot lol. All new and fresh now. At first I thought someone may have got in and reset it, but that didn’t happen so I just did it myself anyway to be on the safe side.

    I actually assumed based on the number of times it asked that someone figured out a way to put a virus on my iPad to see all the nudes of mine I have in iCloud. Then I realized how it would be an apt revenge for their trickery and kept trying to give them my password. Alas, “rubber duck in my butt #1203” will most likely never be posted by these heathen.

    i get annoying iCloud password whenever i wake up my iphone ten verifying takes forever the connection error… what is going on? this happen ever since upgrade to IOS 8.1 …. really annoying Apple please fix this!!!!!

    I continue to get this message asking for my password for ICloud…anyone know how long this will continue? and why? I just did the latest IOS update but its still happening.
