AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon need to watch out. The “uncarrier” has announced yet another couple of reasons they hope will get you to ditch your current cellular provider for T-Mobile. Today, CEO John Legere and his cohorts have come out to announce that T-Mobile is now offering a 2-line family plan that comes with unlimited talk, text, and 4G data, for $100 a month.
Referencing the fact (at least according to T-Mobile) that “75% of people “hate” monitoring their families’ data usage,” the company wants to offer a plan that’s affordable and yet gives customers the freedom not to worry about how quickly they’re eating gigs. The new plan costs a family of 2 $100 per month, but more lines can be added for an additional $40 apiece.
Additionally, the company has resurrected its $100 per month plan for four lines, which offers unlimited talk and text but limits each phone to 2.5 GB of 4G data. After this 2.5 GB is used, unlimited throttled data will still be active until the end of the month.
Both of these plans significantly undermine the offerings of T-Mobile’s main competitors, with a side-by-side comparison shown in the graph above. The difference in price for the unlimited plan for a family of four ($180 at T-Mobile) is especially striking.

Includes data tethering? When does unlimited throttle?
I believe they have a habit of throttling unlim users between 15-20 GB and more officially, you get 5 GB of hotpot on unlimited.
No throttling on unlimited plans.
I wish they’d split it in half since I only need one line, the $50 plan only has 1GB of LTE
I wish the 4 line plan has 10GB of shared data instead of 2.5GB each. I tend to used more data and not everyone uses more than 1GB/month
Nice, I’m combining my plan with my sisters. I have a single line with 3 GB of LTE for $60 now. With this new plan, I’ll be paying less than $50 per month for unlimited data.
Things like this make me want to switch from $TT but the one thing holding me back is the ability to talk and use data at the same time. My customers call me just to say, “I just sent you a file. Check your email and let me know if you got it.” I usually stay on the phone and answer their question. Yes… I could switch, get on TMO and just tell the customer I will call them back after I check but I get about 20 calls a day with that same question so I think the time I save with talk/data is worth it.
Sorry TMO… maybe once your network can handle both then I’ll bring my 7 lines over to you.
I think talk and data is available with any GSM carrier (aka TMobile). I could be wrong though, you might want to double check.
Yes it is. I use it and that tech is inherent in UMTS networks (and of course LTE networks that have VoLTE implemented with a compatible device).
Maybe I’m missing something here, but why wouldn’t you be able to use simultaneous data on Tmo? I do, and it works just fine. Granted, I can’t speak for their VoLTE support but talk/surf works just fine on UMTS.
You’re smoking crack, T-Mobile supports simultaneous voice and date, and has done so for a long while already. I believe the only ones that don’t support it yet are Verizon, and MAYBE Sprint.
Technically Verizon does if you’re using VoLTE. I’m not sure if Sprint has begun deploying that yet or not.
Neither Sprint nor Verizon have officially launched VoLTE yet. T-Mobile is the only carrier with it completely rolled out to its entire network.
t-mobile handles voice and data at the same time. that is one thing i loved about att and still use on t-mobile daily!
@michael person im on t-mobile with a note 3 and i have no issues using talk and data at the same time. if you have Lte capable phone then when you are talking on the phone you drop down to 4g and you are still able to use your data at the same time
Question: do you guys in the US have any internet at Home? and what do you download continuosly to generate so many GB of data a month? I don’t even manage so much at home with a 120Mbit line. I hardly do more than 2GB a month on cellular.
And 180$ is *expensive* regardless of all the options provided.
PS: data tethering is available standard in most (if not all) data plans here in Germany.
Not speaking for myself, but I’ve read many comments that people download a ton of porn. Why they are using their phone and not home internet boggles me too. That said, I use 4-8GB per month with occasional iTunes Match streaming, app updates and casual internet use.
$180 is not expensive for 4 phone lines ($45 per line for unlimited everything). That’s the best deal of the 4 major carriers for that many lines.
Forgot to mention that streaming movies and TV shows through services like Netflix uses a ton of data as well.
While I was aircrew in the military, I was constantly traveling, so i didn’t have internet at home, because I was never really home. My phone with AT&T unlimited plan while tethering was my only source of internet. I constantly downloaded movies, music, as well as doing the whole social media thing. My monthly usage was anywhere between 10-25 GB of data.
Many people do watch a lot of videos on youtube, netflix, etc… and that does take a lot of bandwidth, especially if you travel a lot.
It’s amazing how people are still so misinformed about T-Mobile. One person thinks they throttle unlimited, another thinks they can’t do simultaneous voice and data. Makes me wonder if many more people have been lied to and remained gullible by employees of other wireless carriers, or friends or family with a strong bias against T-Mobile or for their own wireless carriers.

As one that switched two months ago from AT&T to Sprint, a fair amount of warning.
There is a reason that T-mobile and Sprint are making these offers.
You see AT&T and Verizon matching them?? No, that is because they are the best and Sprint, T-mobile aren’t close.
It’s been a nightmare for me since switching to Sprint. There data is nothing like AT&T’s, It’s not only slow but only works in 70% of the places that AT&T was perfect in.
I am in Los Angeles on business (live in Northern Virginia), which is suppose to be one of Sprint’s strongest area’s and still not getting great data coverage from Sprint.
Yes you can save a few dollars but there is a point that you will get fed up with crappy service and I will say that for both Sprint and T-mobile they can’t match up with AT&T and Verizon and this is the reason for the cheap prices the last two months.
Be careful in saving a buck or two.
I had similar issues.
I live in SoCal and switched from Verizon to T-Mobile 8 months ago. My service has been better than it ever was with Verizon and my LTE data is much faster. Don’t regret switching one bit. My parents are on Sprint and they will probably be switching to this family plan because Sprint’s coverage really isn’t that great here.
I live in So Cal too, and had AT&T before, grandfathered unlimited data. I’ve switched to T-Mobile almost a year ago, and have had similar if not better service than AT&T. Since 1999 I’ve always had a GSM carrier because I was in the military and needed a phone with SIM card whenever I traveled outside the US. Never had a problem with service from T-Mobile or AT&T.
Wherever T-Mobile does have great service, it IS faster than the other carriers, even faster than AT&T. Of the 4 major carriers in the US, I do hear a lot that Sprint is the worst when it comes to data speeds.
So it does come down to your location. It doesn’t matter if the service is cheap if you can’t get service to begin with, BUT, even AT&T/Verizon are not perfect and don’t have good coverage everywhere.
I’m a happy camper with T-Mobile and even happier now with this new plan!
On AT&T the additional cost to add a line on the Mobile Share Value Plans with 10GB or higher is actually only $15. On 300MB – 6GB is when the line access charge is $25. Gotta love T-Mobile for trying to make other carriers look worse than they are.
