Apple CEO Tim Cook is scheduled to speak at a White House “cyber summit” at the end of the week, The Hill reported today. The White House is expected to unveil a new cybersecurity program during the summit, and is bringing together leaders in technology and government to address the issue.
Cook’s exact talking points haven’t been revealed, but Apple has previously taken strong stances on issues of customer privacy—putting it in direct conflict with the Department of Justice at times.
Earlier this year British prime minister David Cameron said that he would consider banning encrypted chat applications if the government was not granted access to their data. The US government took a similar position shortly thereafter.
Most of the concerns surrounding cybersecurity and user privacy stem from the 2013 relevation that Apple and other companies had possibly turned over customer data to the government or provided backdoors into their devices. Tech companies denied that such measures had ever been implemented.

I second…..if what’s right mean keeping America safe.
No – It’s about Keeping our Constitutional Rights which were put in place before the technology we have was even imagined. But – my privacy is guaranteed by that Bill of Rights, despite what Washington and and all the other governments of the world think.
The NSA has no right to just “sweep” up trillions of communications – and then store them until they can sort and catalog them.
And as far as your “. . . keeping America safe” – wake up. Hitler kept Germany safe – or so he said. That turned out real well, didn’t it?
