How to watch Apple’s Spring Forward event livestream on Windows (and Android)

Officially, Apple’s event livestream only works with Safari on Mac OS X, iPhones, iPads, Apple TV (where the channel just appeared) and iPod touch. However, if you are on Windows (or even Android) — there is a workaround if you want to follow along with the announcements. (This trick will also work if you happen to be using an older version of OS X or iOS 6 that QuickTime Player doesn’t support)

  • Download VLC, the VideoLan media player, from the web.
  • Once downloaded, launch the app.
  • Navigate to the ‘Media’ tab and select ‘Open Network Stream ….
  • In the URL field, type (or copy) the following link. This is the direct location to the stream (which is the stream Apple TV uses internally):

    http://p.events-delivery.apple.com.edgesuite.net/1503ohibasdvoihbasfdv/m3u8/atv_mvp.m3u8

  • Press Play. The stream may appear broken until it is has started. Refresh the stream when the video has begun (at 10AM PDT) and everything should work fine. You can watch the live video along with everyone else.

Note that Apple will be doing it’s semi-liveblog thing again this time, so even if the video is unsupported, it may be worth keeping apple.com/live open in a tab to see what Apple has to feature. Naturally, 9to5Mac will have full coverage of all the announcements right here — stay tuned!

(Thanks to D on Twitter for helping find the link)
