Apple Flattens Spinning Beach Ball of Death in OS X 10.11 El Capitan

Apple has updated the infamous Spinning Beach Ball of Death (a.k.a. the Spinning Pinwheel, Pinwheel of Death, etc) in OS X 10.11 El Capitan with a new flatter design.

With the release of OS X 10.10 Yosemite, Apple has transitioned toward a more flat and modern UI design, yet many elements retained their look from previous OS X releases. OS X 10.11 El Capitan appears to be continuing the visual refinement started in Yosemite, also including the Apple Watch font, San Francisco, as the new system font.

Since updating my 2012 MacBook Pro to a Crucial SSD, in 4 weeks I have yet to see the spinning color wheel for more than a half a second at a time! And even that happened maybe 2-3 times now altogether, I essentially never see it anymore. It’s amazing how much different the SSD IO performance boost makes in not having to see that damn color wheel! A little bit of work and $400, but so totally worth it, it’s like a brand new machine now! I’ll easily get another 3 years out of it.

  2. Yeah, let’s go even more Windows 8 style. WTB new OS designer. Or preferrably the one Apple let go that gave us USABLE UI elements.

  3. I like the appearance of it, but spinning effect is rather unpleasant.

  4. finally i just got a macbook pro this month and find it annoying that the rainbow wheel still had the mavericks kind of UI

Looks like the new “Gay Pride” spinning beachball to me!! More social engineering from Apple.

My beach ball is still shaded and I’m in 10.10.5!
