iOS devices refer to any of Apple’s hardware that runs the iOS mobile operating system which include iPhones, iPads, and iPods. Historically, Apple releases a new iOS version once a year, the current version is iOS 10. Here is the complete list of iOS 10 compatible devices.
In time-honored fashion the leaks are beginning — this picture of a case for iPad 2.0 shows a rear camera, new curves and suggests new speaker positions on the system. Expand Expanding Close
Today we’re liking the BlueSLR gadget, a Bluetooth dongle that lets you control your Nikon SLR from your iPhone, and adds a few other features which justify its $150 price tag.
All you need to do is connect blueSLR to your compatible digital SLR camera and use your phone to adjust your camera’s focus, shutter speed or timer. Expand Expanding Close
So, we had a little idea. To celebrate the opening of promo codes globally, we thought it would be nice for developers to hook us up with codes to distribute to our Twitter followers. The response was overwhelming with over 100 developers responding in just the first hour. We’re not going to continue tweeting them (sorry Twitter followers, we underestimated the response) at the 9to5mac twitter account.
The Good News: If developers want to Tweet some codes for their Apps, please do it yourself with the following hashtag: #9to5macHolidayPromoCodes
iOS app users can follow #9to5macHolidayPromoCodes here for free promo codes for paid apps. Hopefully we can get it trending and get some publicity for indy developers and at the same time get our readers some free quality apps.
So, just as a guideline developers, here’s what a good tweet will look like:
Apple has lost its iPhone game team leader, Graeme Devine, who quit the iPhone Game Technologies division last Friday.
Formerly of id Software where he had a hand in development of Quake 3 for Mac, Devine says he quit Apple in order to return to game development — with a focus on titles for the iPhone and iPad. Expand Expanding Close
We told you earlier that CNNreported on Steve Wozniak having a white iPhone 4 and we’ve just found out it’s a fake! Reader Josh sent Apple’s co-founder an e-mail and here’s the reply:
This Chinese teen sold the white parts on the internet. I got in early (although the kid had already made $130K) and got my front and back plates and modified my iPhone 4.
COMPUTERWORLD: Apple CEO Steve Jobs made the news today with a promise his company will make its online hosted MobileMe service much better next year. Other than improved stability, reliability and consistent performance, just what exactly do we want Apple to give us? Here’s a few suggestions.
Looks like there’s action being taken against China’s grey iProduct market. Just weeks Apple was forced to close its retail stores there as price-gougers became a high-street problem, Chinese customs have detained 14 iPad-smuggling housewives, a report claims.
Customs officials in Shenzhen caught 14 housewives trying to carry 88 (presumably 3G) iPads and 340 mobile phones into China. One of the women had 65 phones strapped around her waist along with another 20 in her handbag. (The report doesn’t say what the phones were, but we have a hunch…) Expand Expanding Close

According to Digitimes Apple has ordered the BLUs (back light units) for the upcoming iPad 2. These backlight units will reportedly be used in conjunction with LCD displays built by LG and Chimei Innolux. Apple ordering backlights means the iPad 2 won’t feature an AMOLED display (not that anyone thought they would), as AMOLED’s don’t use backlights. Hopefully Apple figures out a way to slap a Retina Display on the iPad 2’s list of features.
Update: Looks like Google may have thrown the app up a bit early – It’s now gone from “all the world’s” App Stores.
After being an iOS web app for sometime now, Google has finally released a native Google Latitude client to the App Store and it’s free. Google Latitude is essentially a Google Map that has points with all your friend’s locations – seeing they like Google and being stalked – and works in the background.
With Google Latitude, see where your friends are right now. Latitude lets you stay in touch with your friends and family by making it easy to share where you are and see each other on a map.
With Latitude, you can:
* See your friends on a map – find out who’s nearby and meet up.
* Share your location continuously with whomever you choose – help friends and family stay in touch with you, even when you can’t take out your phone.
* Control your privacy – share only city-level location, hide your location, or turn off background updating at any time.
Latitude lets you share your location in the background, even when the app is closed or your device screen is locked. Background updating requires an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 with iOS 4 or above.
You can also enjoy Latitude from your computer at google.com/latitude to see where your friends are or turn on optional apps such as Google Location History for a personal history dashboard.
Google also promises some nice privacy features in the app but we’ll have to see how well they actually perform. It’s free so you might want to give it a try and did we mention it’s only out in Asia/Australia right now? (viaTech Crunch)
A new iOS tool called iOSFlashVideofound on iSpazio allows you to view Flash embedded movies on iOS devices. The bookmarklet allows videos from Dailymotion, Flickr Video, MegaVideo and Vimeo that are embedded Flash in websites to play using their backend H.264 video. It is basically the same trick that Apple uses to allow embedded YouTube Flash video to be played without Flash.
We hope (expect?) Apple to make this available natively at some point in the future.
In an interview with Beet.TV, Joe Ambeault, Verizon’s Director of Consumer Product Development, says (1:55) that Verizon will get around to putting television programming on iOS and Mac at the beginning of next year. Comcast will have iPad video working this month, it said earlier. Pffft.
COMPUTERWORLD: Apple’s plotting course for the release of iPad 2.0 in February today’s hot rumor claims, but there’s some signs Apple plans a massacre as it prepares the ground for 2011’s expected battle with tablets powered by Android’s more tablet-friendly “Honeycomb” software. Apple has price, subsidy and many more options open to it as it moves into next year.
According to some reports, Apple will be introducing iPad 2.0 this February. Meanwhile, Google is getting ready for battle with a future introduction of Android Honeycomb, software designed to drive Android tablets.
Google Android boss Andy Rubin showed an Honeycomb powered Motorola Tablet at the All Things D Dive Into Mobile conference last night, saying this product would ship next year.

According to an overseas report from Digitimes, Apple’s second generation iPad is set to begin shipping by the end of February 2011- just about 100 days from now. Apple’s longtime manufacturer, Foxconn, will be taking the lead on iPad 2 production and they will of course be working with multiple component suppliers. Initial shipments will range between 400,000 and 600,000 units.
The sources pointed out that the iPad 2 will ship as soon as the end of February in 2011. Apple originally planned to start mass production in January, but because the device’s firmware is currently still in testing, Apple has been postponing the schedule. Since Foxconn’s new plants in Chengdu are still in pilot production, iPad 2 will be mainly supplied by its Shenzhen plants, while the company’s upstream component partners have all been notified of the shipments schedule. Jailbroken iPad users running iOS 4.2 are now able to run Apple’s iMovie iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4 application via a few SSH tricks. The problem is that iMovie runs like an iPhone app on an iPad- letterboxed. That’s where the jailbreak app FullForce comes in. The jailbreak-only app (available on Cydia) makes iMovie run fullscreen like a native iPad app. Check out more screenshots and instructions after the break (Thanks, SilverTH):
The January 2011 edition of Consumer Reports comes out with an extremely negative view of AT&T carrier performance, likely just in time for the release of the Verizon iPhone. The Houston Chroniclecut out the carrier reviews and it is a painful one for AT&T. AT&T failed miserably in each and every category, rating the worst in every area except texting in which it was second to worst. That being said, only regional carrier US Cellular had any significant “Better” notations with most carriers ranking in the middle.
In response to the Consumer Reports survey, an AT&T spokesperson e-mailed the following statement: Expand Expanding Close

The eBook wars have just become a tri-partisan dispute, with Amazon versus Apple now seeing a third gorilla enter the room as Google launches its long-anticipated ebookstore.
