eBay hires Apple’s e-commerce head R.J. Pittman as its Chief Product Officer

eBay has hired Apple’s head of e-commerce R.J. Pittman as its new Chief Product Officer and Senior Vice President, the online payments company tells us today. At eBay, Pittman will lead marketplace development and product strategy, and he will report directly to eBay President Devin Wenig. At Apple, Pittman has served as the brains behind Apple’s online sales platforms. Before Apple, Pittman was a Product Manager at Google.

As he describes on his LinkedIn profile:

Leading the e-commerce revolution for Apple. I am responsible for worldwide design, product management, and e-commerce innovation for the multi-billion dollar online business. I am also responsible for growing the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Mac e-commerce businesses via the web, mobile commerce, and contact center. Serving all markets and segments including Consumer, Business, Resellers, Enterprise, Government, and Education.

Because Pittman’s responsibilities and knowledge has powered part of Apple’s sales growth for the past years, this is a notable departure and major pick up for eBay. Pittman served as a top lieutenant to Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s Vice President of the Online Store. This departure comes at a time in which Apple is preparing to shakeup its sales strategy by instating Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts as Senior Vice President of both physical retail sales and online sales.
