Microsoft announced today that a new system update for its Xbox One game console will soon let users stream live TV to their iPhone or iPad. Set to arrive in the next few months, the Xbox One’s SmartGlass companion app will be equipped with the option to watch television via a local network connection without interrupting a gameplay session.
To pull this off, you’ll need an Xbox One, compatible iOS device and Microsoft’s live TV tuner, which is coming to the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain sometime in October. [Update: turns out you don’t need the tuner after all.] While this new offering will be limited to devices sharing the same home network, it’ll definitely help keep the peace if your household has a gamer who frequently bogarts the TV.

i wish the tuner was coming to the US
Disappointing it won’t work with the HDMI pass through on existing cable box setups
It does work with HDMI pass through the tuner has nothing to do with it.
Part of this article is wrong. The tuner has nothing to do with the TV streaming. The tuner is for non HDMI boxes to be able to be hooked up to the Xbox One. The regular Xbox One without the tuner will still work with the TV streaming.
For further clarification…. “Stream TV to SmartGlass – Launching first in markets receiving the Xbox Digital TV Tuner, Xbox One owners will be able to stream their TV across their home network to their smartphones and tablets using the Xbox SmartGlass app. They can also pause, play and rewind as well as change channels, without interrupting gameplay on the Xbox One. This will work for SmartGlass apps on Windows, iOS, and Android.” It just says it’s coming first in Europe, the tuner has nothing to do with it.
Not sure what the point of this will be once it comes out. You still need a cable subscription and pretty much anyone on a modern cable tuner has the ability to watch live tv on their mobile device unless it is blocked – which will likely still apply to microsoft.
I like it, no quality restrictions, all of my On Demand and DVR content on all of my devices without having to use the TV. The Live TV channels given by our cable operators are very limited.
You don’t need a cable subscription given this is compatible with the new tuner they’re releasing.
I really wanted a PS4 but all my friends were getting XB1 so i stayed with Xbox and am very very happy with it, especially being a cord cutter. This thing does it all. Its Microsoft so yeah it has a few hiccups but its legit shit. I still want to get a PS4 but am happy for the X1.
I have both and I love my Xbox One so much better!!
Meanwhile, I use a console to play games. I don’t want to spend $400 for an underpowered console that focuses way too much on TV. Especially one brought to us by the makers of the Zune, Kin, Surface, and all things Windows.
I personally love my Xbox One over my PS4 it has a lot more features same multi-plats and (in my opinion) better exclusives. I’m always using my Xbox One no matter what whether it’s for entertainment, gaming or both at the same time. I also personally love that the Xbox Team puts the owners opinions and suggestions first and provides monthly updates. I will definitely agree with you on their failures, I personally hate Microsoft and am an Apple person but I LOVE my Xbox One.
