Apple releases iOS 8.0.1 with fixes, but many users reporting it breaks Cellular + Touch ID

Update: Many users are reporting that cellular functions and Touch ID are no longer working post update, so we would recommend holding off until further notice. Many who have updated their iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and iPhone 5s are reporting no problems, so it appears this problem is likely confined to iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Update 2: The update has been pulled. Apple has issued a statement to Re/code:

https://twitter.com/JohnPaczkowski/status/514843301996802048

Apple has released iOS 8.0.1 to the public, and it’s rolling out now OTA to all devices capable of running iOS 8. The update’s build number is 12A402, and it packs fixes for a variety of bugs that have plagued users of version 8.0. Most notably, the new version includes a fix for the bug that was keeping HealthKit apps from the App Store. Furthermore, the update addresses a plethora of other problems including an issue with apps accessing photos from the Photo Library, a bug involving 3rd party keyboards, an issue that caused unexpected data usage when receiving SMS and MMS messages, an issue involving ringtones not being restored by iCloud, and more.

The update also packs a variety of improvements for already-existing features. According to the release notes, the new Reachability feature should have improved reliability, and there is also better support for Family Sharing Ask To Buy for in-app purchases. This update comes just one week following the initial release of iOS 8, and like that version, the update will work with iPhone 4S or later, iPad 2 or later, both models of the iPad mini, and the 5th generation iPod touch. The full release notes are below.

This release contains improvements and bug fixes, including:

• Fixes a bug so HealthKit apps can now be made available on the App Store
• Addresses an issue where 3rd party keyboards could become deselected when a user enters their passcode
• Fixes an issue that prevented some apps from accessing photos from the Photo Library
• Improves the reliability of the Reachability feature on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
• Fixes an issue that could cause unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS/MMS messages
• Better support of Ask To Buy for Family Sharing for In-App Purchases
• Fixes an issue where ringtones were sometimes not restored from iCloud backups
• Fixes a bug that prevented uploading photos and videos from Safari

“Update: Many users are reporting that cellular functions and Touch ID are no longer working post update, so it might be a good idea to be careful before jumping the gun on this one.”

In other, better, words – It would be a good idea to not update to 8.0.1, and wait for 8.0.2.

  2. Jo Se - 10 years ago

When and where did it release ?

iPhone or iTunes not showing anything

    Developer account not showing anything

  3. does it fix the bending problem?

  4. Robert Nixon - 10 years ago

Great, updated and now I have “No Service”. Apple’s software QA process is so completely fucked.

  9. fluhartyml - 10 years ago

I thought the keyboard bug was done on purpose to prevent key-logging of passwords by the third party keyboard developers.

  22. Ryan Callahan - 10 years ago

“No Service” after updating…. tried everything but restore (i’ll save that for an extreme last resort). Seriously, Apple?

  23. BaoChao (@BaoMingChao) - 10 years ago

No Service and TouchID is now totally dead for me. iPhone 6 Plus.

  24. Cameron Scott - 10 years ago

Holy Moley! An update that is 1.94 GB in size? Download time will be 40 hours due to the slowdown in WIFI the update to 8.0 caused in the first place.

  25. Noah Charles Damoose - 10 years ago

no service and touch ID doesnt work at all thanks apple

  26. David Berger - 10 years ago

Are they serious? No more TouchID, no cellular service?

  31. epogue - 10 years ago

Yep, TouchID and cellular service are broken. iPhone 6 64GB.

  37. JackBG (@IDanov) - 10 years ago

Is there a way to restore to 8.0?

    • baywatchboy - 10 years ago

Should be able to if upgrade was done over wifi and not through iTunes, right?

      • eldonchew - 10 years ago

        Doesn’t matter.
As long as Apple is signing that version of iOS, it can be restored

    • eldonchew - 10 years ago

Search online for iOS 8 ipsw and download one that matches your device and model and restore via iTunes

    • eldonchew - 10 years ago

Go to iTunes and restore there

  38. nesscar - 10 years ago

Cell Service and TouchID is broken on iPhone 6 Plus

  41. Scott - 10 years ago

Both Touch ID and no cell service bugs. iPhone 6.

  42. Harrison Piper - 10 years ago

iPhone 6 on AT&T, cellular completely broken as well as Touch ID. Currently talking to Apple support to see what is going on.

    • Brian (@b_etter) - 10 years ago

Just got off the phone with Apple support, and apparently people have been chatting about this issue “in the back rooms”? No idea what that means… but it was suggested to do a backup, put the phone into recovery mode and attempt a restore via iTunes.

My restore (download of 8.0.1) is in progress now – I’ll update as I go further.

      • Harrison Piper - 10 years ago

They just instructed me to do the same. Sounds like they have no clue whether it will actually work or not, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed here.

      • Harrison Piper - 10 years ago

Just got word that the restore does fix it. So good news there

      • Brian (@b_etter) - 10 years ago

Software is installing now – fingers crossed. We’ll see if this works…

      • baywatchboy - 10 years ago

        Thanks. Trying now

  43. Cell Service and Touch ID working on 16GB 5s – Canada

  44. JackBG (@IDanov) - 10 years ago

Has anyone tried a full restore from the dev center?

  45. Brandon Broughton - 10 years ago

iPhone 6 Plus 64GB AT&T here….no cell service and Touch ID completely busted after update.

  46. aeronperyton - 10 years ago

72MB, OTA. It initially said it would take 35 minutes to download, it took about 35 seconds. Japan’s LTE network is best network. It took more time to verify the contents of the download.

The spinning dial prior to starting the update was at the bottom of the screen just above the home button, odd.

Everything went smoothly, I sat there waiting for the phone to restart only to realize it already had and went into power saving mode before I noticed. On 8.0 I was having infrequent issues where the control panel and search stuttered if accessed it for the first time in a while, now all the pulldown and pullup features seems to move a lot faster and no longer stutter. Yay. :)

  47. proudappleuser - 10 years ago

I don’t want you all to feel special. My iPhone 5s is in recovery mode.

  48. James Alexander - 10 years ago

    Mine works fine.

  54. yuniverse7 - 10 years ago

Mine’s also broken. No cellular service and no Touch ID
    iPhone 6+, T-Mobile

  55. tofik0 - 10 years ago

This is the worst launch ever, Asian translation on the live feed, pissed off iTunes users because of “free music”, bending issues, buggy os and now an update that just made it all worse.. Why didn’t I go with the gs5 this time around, this would have never happened if Steve was still around. Apple I expect an event where you formally apologize to your loyal customers and not just say” look so and so also had update bugs” I’m not worried about any other brand , I own an iPhone. /rant

  56. Jim Phong - 10 years ago

iPhone 5S has TouchID just like iPhone6 and 6Plus…..

  57. DJ SHY (@djshynyc) - 10 years ago

and whats next? Free bumpers for everyone!?

  58. beyondthetech - 10 years ago

Maybe breaking iOS 8.0.1 was a way for everyone (especially all the celebrities) to lose the nudies on their iPhones.

  59. Same issue here. iPhone 6 with AT&T. No cellular service or touch id after update.

  60. Serg Vargas - 10 years ago

Has anyone reverted back to 8.0?

  61. DJ SHY (@djshynyc) - 10 years ago

i don’t know what you guys are complaining about……. I LOVE MY NEW iPHONE TOUCH 6….

    =/

  62. Duston Foster - 10 years ago

…. Clicked update then logged into 9to5… Will know in 2 min if it works or not!

You can easily downgrade to 8.0 anyway

  63. 6+ cell phone data broken too

  64. Miki CEO (@miki_ceo) - 10 years ago

Iphone 6+ 128Gb Verizon, 8.0.1 no service and TouchID isn’t working at all

  65. Lee Palisoc - 10 years ago

Both cellular and Touch ID is fine.

  66. Jessie (@ItsMeJJP) - 10 years ago

i chatted with apple they said to do a clean install on my phone, but i dont have the time to do it, and that should fix the issue.

    • Jon Stahler (@JonStahler) - 10 years ago

“Oh just delete your entire phone and all it’s settings” is not an acceptable fix to this nor should anyone take it as one. The fact is they missed something huge in their QA process and now a ton of iPhone 6’s are expensive wifi connected paperweights.

  67. Bring Scott Forstall back!!

  68. Duston Foster - 10 years ago

    Hey everyone.

We all doing OTA updates?? Anyone do a full restore and see if it works?

  69. iphone 6 128 GB AT&T broken…no touch ID …no Cellular Service

  70. JackBG (@IDanov) - 10 years ago

Anyone has a GM release link for ios 8 12A366 — Iphone 6 plus?

  71. singingfriar - 10 years ago

After doing a full restore through iTunes (8.0.1 download), I get service now. I’m restoring my iCloud backup and we’ll see about TouchID.

  72. Brian (@b_etter) - 10 years ago

Looks like update/restore via iTunes is the best way (right now) to update to 8.0.1… I’m running an iPhone 6, 64GB on AT&T.

A few comments below seem to echo the same thing. Will update as more information comes in.

  73. proudappleuser - 10 years ago

A DFU restore seemed to fix it.

  74. For some odd reason, I can’t even see the IOS 8.0.1 update. My iPhone 5s considers itself up to date with IOS 8.0. Lucky Me I guess

  75. Brian (@b_etter) - 10 years ago

Looks like tethered restore/update works… the moral of the story – don’t do an OTA update right now. Wait until Apple fixes things or do a tethered update.

    Good luck!

  76. aanngelc - 10 years ago

Does it break cellular on iPad air?

  77. Busted Cellular for me…

  78. dailycardoodle - 10 years ago

broken my 6 as described on EE UK also. I guess they didn’t test this at all?!

  79. telecastle - 10 years ago

iOS 8.0.1 was supposed to be rolled out to iPhone fans within ISIS in Syria and Iraq as a supplemental feature for the fireworks display they are currently viewing, but Apple accidentally released this to the rest of the world.

  80. telecastle - 10 years ago

iPhone 6 is a great device to sit on – it bends to the contour of one’s buttocks. The camera is great as well. Healthkit – that’s an important feature. As for some obscure functions like cellular signal, do you people are just looking for something to complain about?

  81. Aleksandar Srdic - 10 years ago

STUCK with NO SERVICE nor TOUCH ID!!! Apple is becoming sooooooooo lame in software matter that I can’t even believe! Android feelings….

    Is downgrading an option?

    (iPhone 6 128GB – T-mobile)

    • deniali - 10 years ago

Yes, you can download the ipsw file for 8.0 or 7.1.2 and then go to iTunes and press shift while clicking Restore. Then select your file and that’s it.

      • dailycardoodle - 10 years ago

Where can we download the ipsw file from?

      • deniali - 10 years ago

Search the net. Many have the ipsw files like : Remondpie.com (frontpage)

      • the ipsw from Apple has not been officially released for the 6 or 6 plus (at least not via the developer channels). I would say use at your own risk from a 3rd party website.

      • deniali - 10 years ago

That not correct. The ipsw files for 8.0.1 come from the official Apple site and have been released for public (and after the complaints they pulled it off)

      • I meant to add that you can get it iTunes if you have done a restore on the device (it gets downloaded to your PC or Mac) but if you haven’t done it the only option is to download it.

      • philboogie - 10 years ago

Restoring to iOS7 won’t help as Apple doesn’t sign it anymore.

      • deniali - 10 years ago

False. Apple is still signing 7.1.2:

        http://www.icj.me/ios/all#iPhone62

  82. opticalserenity - 10 years ago

6 Plus here, broke touch ID and cellular. Hard reboot didn’t fix it.

  83. vijhav - 10 years ago

    They pulled the update

  84. telecastle - 10 years ago

Those who are having an issue with cellular signal on iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus running 8.0.1, have you tried to pull the SIM card out and then put it back in?

  85. Thank you beta testers. I’m sure glad I saw this first.

  86. Trying a DFU mode restore from iTunes. I let everyone know how it goes…

  87. Ankit Jain (@ankneo) - 10 years ago

who needs a microwave when iOS update can fry it :P

  88. Alex P (@BotsmanAP) - 10 years ago

Before doing the downgrade, Downloaded and reinstalled the update using iTunes/computer. Working fine now on 8.0.1 w/iPhone 6 128GB AT&T

  89. JackBG (@IDanov) - 10 years ago

Doesnt even let me restore now. No builds for Iphone 6 and 6+ on the developers center

  90. PMZanetti - 10 years ago

WTF, Apple is having its worst month in recent history.

  91. DFU restore from iTunes works! Google around for instructions on how to put the device in DFU mode.

  92. Billy Graham - 10 years ago

apple just pulled an android… o wait… even android never been this bad

  93. Bruno Ricardo - 10 years ago

just restored back to 8.0 (built 12A365) and got back to work… thanks for the hassle Apple…

  94. Kalin Kurtev (@kkurtev) - 10 years ago

Just download IOS 8.0 and “update” not “restore, this way you wont have to re-sync all of your things from iTunes.
Use the “shift” key for pc” or “option” for mac when you check for updates in iTunes and select the downloaded ipsw

UPDATE: Apple has pulled iOS 8.0.1 from the Developer Center and it is also no longer available via an over-the-air download.

Got iOS 8.0.1 and have had the Touch ID and Cellular NO SERVICE issues? Here is how to fix that:

    1. Based on the model number of your iPhone, you will be able to identify which iOS firmware file you need to download. You can find model number on the iPhone’s back cover.

    2. Plug your device into your computer

    3. Turn off the device by holding the Sleep/Wake or Power button and swiping it off

    4. Hold the power button for 3 seconds

    5. Begin holding the Home button without releasing the Sleep/Power button for 10 seconds

    6. Release the power button and continue holding the home button until you get a popup from iTunes that your device is recognized as being in recovery mode.

    7. Now hold down the (Mac Option/Alt) (Windows: Shift) Key and click on the Restore button. In the navigation sheet that appears locate the ipsw file you just downloaded and click Choose. Again, this will wipe out all the data on it so be sure to have a backup.

    8. Be patient and wait for the installation process to be completed by iTunes

    9. Once the restore is completed you can select your backup or treat the device as a new device.

Here’s another important note (which Windows users should pay particular attention to; also, this is something that only applies if the user chooses to look for the desired IPSW file on the Internet). Your browser may change the IPSW file into a .zip file. For example, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer does this, if used to download the firmware bundle. This doesn’t mean it’s unusable. Instead of wasting time switching web browsers, just rename the file to end in “.ipsw” and iTunes will accept it.

  96. The UPDATE HAS BEEN PULLED from the server, so is no longer available…

  97. Joseph (@joek1971) - 10 years ago

    Restoring :(

  98. PMZanetti - 10 years ago

If you restore back to 8.0, do so before iCloud backup runs while on 8.0.1, or you may not be able to restore from backup once you boot up 8.0.

  99. jasonnlarkin - 10 years ago

I’ve put my iPhone 6 into DFU mode and currently trying a complete restore via iTunes. Furious.

Apple Support was useless and they will be hearing from me again with a strongly worded email.

  103. No annoying cellular calls along with improved security? Sounds good to me! ;-)

  105. xbepax4224 - 10 years ago

can everyone shut up? dang. I’m on here to learn about apple and news and updates. not to hear everyone complain. google instructions, your not guaranteed a response on here! and for the people saying “they pulled an android” gtf off this site. apple enthusiasts need to stick together and look at it as a speed bump in apples road. they WILL fix it and it WILL be sooner rather than later. just calm down and enjoy what you have cuz i know the people without homes aren’t complaining they don’t have service. they probably don’t have a phone. so shut up and resect what you have, it will be fixed.

Apple CSRs: Tim and Jony, everyone is complaining that their phones are bending!
Tim: Hmmm what shall we do Jony?
Jony: phones? Let’s just fix that…

Apple is squarely to blame here. They released a product they didnt send for beta testing with willing devs first.

To top it all off they didnt even offer up a temporary fix.

LMAO Apple under Tim Cook is such a disaster. He needs to resign and before he does, he needs to make sure to hire Scott Forstall back to take charge of the iOS design. History is repeating itself. Let us sit back and witness the continuation of the downfall and demise of Apple, all over again.

Why would Tim be responsible for developers not following the normal QA process? I think he needs to make some heads roll potentially. There is no way this should’ve happened if they went through the developer QA process.

Jesus H it’s just a phone, nobodies going to die. Well not unless you’ve just updated and currently trying to call an ambulance!

Cellular and Touch Id is still broken, even when I restored to my earlier settings which is before I took 8.0.1 update. This is so frustrating. When is the fix coming.

  114. It’s clear to me that Tim Cook’s team is not focused in making Apple’s software to JUST WORK. I still hate that they killed Aperture, and MBP17, where are the updates for Thunderbolt Display? They’re leaving Pro Users in limbo.

Let’s add this to the list of Apple fails.
Siri, Maps, misleading cell reception, exploding batteries.

Geez, was Apple involved in the Hubble telescope?

    Too funny.

Unfortunately I saw this and upgraded. I spent the next 8 hours going back to 8.0 and restoring the phone. Apple/AT&T had no idea it was a problem !!

Asks for password to open. Will not accept reset password (done on MacBook, or old password. Phone only good as phone. No use for e mail, maps safari. No help available at One to One or on phone. This is a bigger
    problem than being let on

Next year I won’t upgrade my operating systems before christmas.

I expected that after Steve Jobs, Apple would become better at things that have lost their higher management’s focus.

But they have become worse at it.

Now that all of Apple seems to be working on iWatch, iCloud seems way behind schedule, several iOS8 features that were announced are not there and Pages for Mac has been full of obvious bugs for almost a year.

If Apple is going to neglect functionality in favor of style as much as they seem to be, and really become a fashion brand instead of the world’s best tool maker, I might well be heading for another ecosystem.

It broke my 4S. I had to restore via iTunes and then iTunes still installed 8.0.2 which works but has created noticeable lags in performance. Also copy functions are very erratic.
