Apple may soon have an extra supplier of OLED displays for future iPhone: Sharp

iPhone concept from ConceptsiPhone

With Apple expected to switch to OLED screens for future iPhones, it appears that it may not need to rely completely on the two major manufacturers for long. While Samsung and LG currently manufacture most of the world’s OLED screens between them, Nikkei reports that Sharp expects to be doing the same ‘before 2018’ …

If true, that would potentially make it a third supplier for iPhone displays. It’s not yet clear whether Apple plans to switch to OLED screens for all iPhone models, or only for some.

When Foxconn finally bought Sharp in March, it promised to turn around the loss-making business within two years, but it had previously not been expected to be in a position to begin manufacturing OLED panels so soon.

Sharp currently supplies display panels to Apple, but it does not own OLED technology yet. Foxconn has said it will invest 200 billion yen to help Sharp develop the technology.
