Woz: "It

Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak, has stepped up to the plate and has voiced his concerns about the iPhone 4 antenna issue in an interview with a Dutch journalist.

Here’s the part from the interview that you’ll probably want to read/care about:

Henk van Ess (Journalist): How did you find out about the antenna problems?

Steve Wozniak: The first time I tried I was able to duplicate the problem. My wife was driving me to the airport and as soon as I got a short distance from my home, and no longer on wifi, I tried it by accessing a web page (using Safari on my iPhone 4) and observing the progress bar.

Steve Wozniak explains why the iPod will die

Apple co-founder (in picture to the right, to the left is Steve Jobs) Steve Wozniak warns that the iPod’s days are numbered in an interview with UK newspaper, the Telegraph.

"The iPod has sort of lived a long life at number one. Things like, that if you look back to transistor radios and Walkmans, they kind of die out after a while", Wozniak warned.

"It’s kind of like everyone has got one or two or three. You get to a point when they are on display everywhere, they get real cheap and they are not selling as much," he added.

iPhone Hacks – What Would 1975 Jobs/Wozniak Do?

Steve jobs hacks phones

The latest news around the net is the iPhone hack that allows you to take the sim-locked iPhone off of AT&T and use it freely on any GSM network – making the must-have device more accessible.   This is a boon to people (like us) abroad who love the iPhone but don’t want to pay AT&T’s exorbitant roaming extortion fees. Apple hasn’t taken an official stance on this issue perhaps because of a little bit of history. Maybe you’ve seen the picture to the right on Steve Wozniak’s official website:

Yep.  That is Steve Jobs on the left, but the most startling thing in this picture (besides Woz’s ‘do) is that young Jobs is playing with a piece of contralband called the “Blue Box.”  What is a Blue Box?  From Wikipedia:

Thoughts on Wireless Access

We were Inspired by Steve Wozniak’s comment the other day on Apple’s stance on SIM Locking vs. DRM locking.  We decided to do something about it.  What if we took Apple’s position on DRM for music and applied it to the SIM locking of the iPhone?  Does Apple stand up to its own scrutiny on the locking in of content and services?  For this experiment we did the following:

  1. We took Steve Jobs Open Letter to the Music industry
  2. Copied it verbatim
  3. Did a Text Edit – Find/Replace on it using the following:
    cd -> Home Wifi
    iPod -> iPhone
    music -> wireless data
    iTunes -> AT&T
    MP3 -> GSM
    AAC -> EDGE
    leak -> hack
    DRM -> SIM lock
    copied -> used
    song -> phone
    Screen
    Capture
  4. Then we cleaned it up and removed iTunes specific data.

Below you will find the results of this experiment.  Notice how just exchanging a few words turns everything around on Apple.

Woz, Keeping it Real

Laptop Mag got a pretty solid interview out of Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak.  It is pretty entertaining overall but pay particular attention to the money quote:

L: Is there anything you would change about the iPhone?
SW: I think it could be more like a computer. It should be open like a computer. Anyone should be able to develop their own games and programs on it. And keep the phone and the phone services off guard so it’s protected.

L: So you’re in favor of the unlocking and jailbreaking for third-party applications?
SW: From a business point of view, Apple owns what they have done. They have a right to lock it. But I am really for the unlockers, the rebels trying to make it free. I’d really like it to be open to new applications. I’d like to install some nice games. Why in the world can I not install a ringtone that I’ve made? How would that hurt AT&T’s network? Here is Steve Jobs sending letters to the record companies saying [they] should provide music that’s unprotected, but here he is taking the opposite approach with the iPhone. I don’t know to what extent AT&T is involved in the thinking and direction.

Woz is camping out for an iPad in a mall y'all

large_image.jpg

Steve Wozniak was seen tonight at the Valley Fair Mall in line, getting ready to camp for his iPad. Camp? in a fricken mall? GREAT IDEA WOZ! Looks like there will be no shortage of media attention at this Apple Store. As you can see Woz decided to bring some 2 dollar bills. Maybe this is all he has left after buying an iPhone 3GS in Black and White, as well as buying all the Segways he can get his hands on. Maybe the 2 represents the number he used to be in the company. Whatever it is, it’s sure great to see one of the biggest geeks alive waiting in line for his iPad like everyone else.

Steve Wozniak gets engineer canned by taking picture with 3G iPad

We really hate to hear this kind of thing.  Steve Wozniak, writing on Gizmodo (surprising given the timing in its own right!), reports that in the wake of the leaked iPhone mess, Apple has fired an engineer who showed Woz the 3G iPad the night of the release of the iPad.  Known only as ‘AJ’, the engineer wasn’t supposed to take the 3G iPad off of Cupertino’s campus until after midnight.

But I can tell you that the test engineer who showed me an iPad after midnight, for 2 minutes, during the iPad launch was indeed fired. I opted to spend 2 minutes with Numbers on this iPad, trying some stunts I’d seen on Apple’s website demo video. I was not told that it was a 3G model and I had no way to know that. I was told that this engineer had to wait until midnight to show it outside of Apple’s secure area. And I’m an Apple employee who he was showing it to. My guess is that he was allowed to take the iPad outside of the secure area but still not supposed to show it.

Woz didn’t realize that the Black bar on the top was an indicator that the iPad in question was a 3G model.  Woz also thought that, because he was an Apple employee, he wouldn’t get the engineer fired.  I mean, without Woz, none of us would be talking about Apple anything right now.

Woz describes the engineer as:
