Apple issues MacBook Pro with Retina display, MacBook Air software updates to solve battery bugs

Apple has issued software updates for 2012 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina displays, and 2012/2013 MacBook Airs to resolve issues having to do with batteries. The updates are available via the Software Update function in the Mac App Store.

MacBook Air SMC Update 1.9:

This update is recommended for MacBook Air (mid 2012 and mid 2013) models. This update addresses rare issues where the battery unexpectedly stops functioning, the system does not recognize the battery, or the system hangs when the battery charge reaches less than one percent.

Available too for Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013

  3. Worth adding is that they fixed their screw-up with not including the 32-bit camera plugin in OS X 10.8.5 making Skype video calls impossible. Now it finally works again!

I wonder if this means I won’t have to keep replacing the batteries in my MacBook Air every 4 months?

It’s nice to see Apple’s firmware team making improvements… Now, how about Haswell MBPs?

  6. Is anyone else experiencing wifi issues after this update?

I do! I lose connectivity randomly in 4-20 minutes, and reconnect helps for another 4-20 minutes…

I hadn’t had ANY issues noted in the summary of the update. . . until I installed the flipping update.
IMMEDIATELY upon reboot my fan starting screaming. I rebooted, thinking that would solve the issue. It didn’t, and I did a full system shut down. After the shutdown, the computer wouldn’t reboot. At all. The little indicator on the mag power cord wouldn’t even come on. After taking it into the Apple store, I was told my battery was suddenly bad. (I’d been working on it for HOURS that day and hadn’t even hit the 50% mark.) I’m completely convinced this update screwed my system.
