Apple releasing OS X Yosemite public preview tomorrow for free Beta Program members

As we reported earlier this week, Apple has shared that it will open the public beta version of OS X Yosemite tomorrow, July 24th, for users wanting to preview the upcoming version of the Mac operating system ahead of its release targeted for this fall. Users can sign up to be an OS X Beta Program member on Apple’s Beta Program site.

Apple says the OS X Yosemite beta will be updated less frequently for the OS X Beta Program than the version via the OS X Developer Program, but users running the public beta of OS X Yosemite will be able to install the final release of OS X Yosemite over the beta version when it’s readied for release in the fall. The beta version available to OS X Beta Program members will also allow users to easily submit feedback for issues with the Mac operating system ahead of its official public debut.

Earlier this week, Apple released the fourth and latest developer preview of OS X Yosemite through its Developer Program alongside a redesigned iTunes 12.

Last night we reported that despite OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 sharing features that rely on each other heavily, the two operating systems are expected to launch separately as Apple readies the them both for public debut for everyone. As we noted last night, iOS 8 is on track to be released in September while the final version of OS X Yosemite is expected to be ready a month later in October.

Apple first announced that the OS X Beta Program would allow non-developers to preview OS X 10.10 earlier this year at WWDC, although iOS 8 will not receive the same treatment for non-developers and several features require the latest iPhone and iPad operating system.

I have been using the developer Yosemite version for sometime now. I think the new design is cool, and most of the things are pretty. Now there is place that I don’t like at all is the System Preference window. Not the window itself, but the many icons in there, they are ugly things hanging in there. I wish they can fix it before final release.

    • Thanks for the feedback. The question that remains us whether it is stable enough for production use, meaning in my case that I only have one MacBook Pro which I rely on 100%.
Primarily, I need QuickBooks 2014 for Mac to be compatible. The rest of my apps can wait.

      • The beta, is well, a beta. I would not reccomend using it on a normal production machine. That being said, the beta includes really awesome features. Although most of them are buggy, its a decent build. As I have done, to test the beta I would install on another partition after backing up.

I have been using the developer preview since the beginning on my everyday macbook, it works very well I have had no issues with preview 4 I think you will be ok to run it on a everyday machine. If apple didn’t think it was good enough for that they wouldn’t release it as a public beta.

Uh…sounds like a bad idea to me. DP4 is no where near ready for the type of people who will end up installing the public beta. I’ve tested and worked on beta Mac OS for a long, long time…I know what I’m talking about, and Yosemite is no where near ready for this.

Gotta agree with you, tried to go from Mavericks to Yosemite (again, every time I revert because it’s too buggy) and this time it kept crashing at the Wizard that launches after rebooting, time machined back to Mavericks again. I like some of the changes, but this is easily the most buggy os I’ve played with, and I’ve been running them since win95. Yosemite is the first beta that I can’t put on my main machine because it’s too unreliable, kinda a smart guy, can get through most issues but this is just too cumbersome. Wait for release.

Well it isn’t exactly the same beta..

I am not a developer but I really want to use Yosemite and test it as I normally would use my mac. That being said, I believe making a partition will affect the way I use it a bit. I am just a college student who uses my mac for email, internet, and papers. What would you recommend…you think it’s safe enough for me to just download as is, or make the separate partition? I consider myself great with technology, however, I have been researching heavily on this partition thing because that’s not something I do everyday, meaning I don’t know how easy it will be.

I’m not using it personally but I do know a few people who are and they haven’t had an issue, likewise I’ve known people who can’t even install it. It’s a beta so you should expect certain things to go wrong.

Just remember: backup, upgrade, save often.
