You’ll notice a few new apps (and less available storage) on your new iPhone 6 or 6 Plus later this week when you fire it up for the first time. According to an internal Apple Retail training document (seen below), iOS 8 compatible iLife and iWork apps will come pre-installed on iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
This includes iMovie, GarageBand, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and iTunes U. Owners of the 16GB models of Apple’s newest smartphones will still have access to these apps for free, but they must be downloaded from the App Store manually or via an App Store prompt. It remains unclear as to whether or not GarageBand in-app purchases will also be available at no additional cost.
Just over a year ago, Apple announced that all new iOS devices would be allowed to download these apps for free alongside the release of major updated versions of each app.Notably missing from that list is iPhoto for iOS, which will be replaced on iOS 8 with the default Photos app on the iPhone as it gains more advanced editing features and iCloud Photo Library support while the Mac moves from iPhoto and Aperture to a new Photos app next year.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will hit stores this Friday starting at $199. Apple began pre-orders for the new devices last Friday and announced this morning a record 4 million iPhones have already been pre-ordered during the first 24 hours of a pre-sales.

nice. One of the reasons for me to get a 64GB mode is that I can have enough memory for these apps. Especially iWork. Never want to use office again. Who will pay for a less decent office tool while the best one is available for free?
Same here!
Plus one
wait for the Jailbreak :) / Hopefully, in a month or so. In the interim, they’ll go in my Zapple folder :)
You do realize that, just like iWork and iLife on OS X, you can simply delete them? No need to hide them if you don’t need them.
Knows how to jailbreak, doesn’t know how to delete apps. Hysterical.
I hope these apps can be deleted because that’s the first thing I’m going to do. I hate “stock ” apps that can’t be deleted.
I’m sure you’ll be able to remove them… It sounds like they’re just saving you the step of having to download them first so they’ll be available when you first power up.
And people complain about bloatware on other devices!
There’s no reason consumers should be able to remove apps they don’t want. Of course, it’s good for business.
Next thing you know they will be forcing downloads of some over the hill band from Ireland ..
Except the cast majority of bloatware on Android shit can’t be deleted (including annoying carrier apps). This isn’t true of the apps on iPhone mentioned above.
Vast majority*
Of course those additional apps can be deleted. Bloatware by definition is a burden not something useful such as the amazing iWork apps for which android has no full alternative that is as advanced, featuring an awesome set of features, a great UI, even more powerful desktop apps and the ability to save documents offline.
Even if said stock apps are great? You are not going to find anything better than iMovie or Garageband for free on the App Store.
This makes a lot of sense, but only if you’re allowed to remove them, which should be the case since they can still be downloaded from the App Store.
I am with you. Granted, I paid for all these when they first came out, and have all but GarageBand installed, but still want the ability to remove them.
All core features of the OS should be accessible via API and any bundled application, sometimes only being composed of a shell/chrome/icon, should be able to be obviated by any suitable alternative from the App store, along with the ability to remove the built-in app to save additional storage space and generally clean up the device. So this includes literally everything outside Settings. Mail, Safari, Music, Maps.
This of course is never going to happen. But, at the very least it would be nice to be able to remove lesser apps like Stocks. ;)
It’s pity that Apple didn’t buy NikSoftware but google did. I mean, it is still for free, but it would be nice to integrate snapseed into photo app. :) I never post any photo without snapseeding it. And it annoys me a bit that the saved photos come shows as if I took them later. Everyting’s good otherwise :).
Tomas.
Happy to hear this. I use these apps all the time and it will save me a lot of time since they’ll already be there.
makes my purchase better and better
After backing up all my old stuff to my new iPhone 6, I lost ilife/iwork apps. Can I get them back?
I still have a backup copy in my iTunes library..
Id love to know the answer to this one as I didn’t get these apps : (
so i have a 128 gigs iphone 6. I don’t have anything pre-installed after i restore it to 8.1. and when i try to download it again from app store, it becomes paid app again. why?? what am i doing wrong?
I bought iPhone 6s today and i accidentally deleted my Imovie app which was preinstalled on my devices can anybody tell me how can i get it back.
I have the exact same problem. I deleted those apps like Keynote and Numbers, but now I want to get them back. When I go to App Store, those apps are sold at prices like USD 8.99. Is there any way I can get them back without paying?
Dafuq, clicking/tapping in App Store on the button with a price such as $4.99 or $9.99 worked for me to re-install the said apps. I mean, I proceeded to the point where iTunes prompted me a message “Are you sure to purchase this app? This purchase will be charged to your credit card,” and then I clicked/tapped “Cancel.” After that, when I returned to the app page in App Store, the button showed “+Get” instead of a price. What an oddity that users must go through this.
