Joan Rivers iPhone 6 product placement goes out to social media weeks after the comedian dies

Apparently whoever runs Instagram and Facebook feeds for the recently deceased Joan Rivers forgot to unschedule social media posts promoting the iPhone 6- that one that was just released today, weeks after Rivers died on September 4th. The message below, which we can only speculate might have been the result of Apple’s efforts to get the device in the hands of celebrities, appeared on Instagram and Facebook accounts for Rivers before being promptly removed earlier today (via BusinessInsider):

“This badass is being replaced by an iPhone 6 (not the fat one). I got this one in 2010 and, after 4 years, my only complaint is that apps are now designed for bigger screens, and the battery is getting tired. Never had a case for it, since it was most beautiful on its own. Great achievement in design. Great product. #apple #iPhone #tech.”

It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen celebrities giving Apple some exposure during product launches. Stephen Colbert, for example, often shows off Apple products before they are event released to the public including this year with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus on last night’s show ahead of today’s launch.

That’s pretty shameful. Really bad timing & taste there.

What? Doesn’t “bad taste” have to be intentional? What kind of idiot would actually believe this was intentional? Is it bad taste if you wrote a joke about Joan Rivers in a book and between the printing of the book and release, she died?

Basically you’re saying “It was bad taste of Joan Rivers’ former publicist (who kinda stopped having that job and getting paid when Joan died) to not have remembered to go into Facebook’s scheduled posting settings in the last couple weeks and delete any upcoming posts.”

      • davidgoscinny - 10 years ago

The bad taste comes from the manner with which they handled the situation. Best to fess up and admit the advertising side of the message rather than pretend nothing was ever posted to begin with.

Let me tell you. Those posts are scheduled not actually posted by Joan Rivers. But i believe the scheduled posts comes from her PR Team which Rivers gives them the timetable posts to be published on time.

      • davidgoscinny - 10 years ago

Well I think in this case it couldn’t be more evident that it is Joan herself making the post :-D

        *isn’t

You say fess up but it’s not likely that this is something Apple’s PR paid for. In fact, I’ve never known them to pay for this kind of product placement – Read ‘iSanely Simple’ by the guy that ran their campaigns with Chiat Day. It’s not their style. They do things through partnerships. Consider P Diddy’s and Dre’s tweets on iPhone launch day. That wasn’t a sponsorship. It was simply business interests aligning. If Apple was in the business of paying celebrities to use their products they’d be using people more relevant than Joan Rivers and P Diddy, obviously. Apple uses TV and Movie placement because it’s all things to all people. Celebrities are divisive and openly choose the iPhone over its competitors anyway so why would they bother to pay them? It’s much more likely that this was set up by her own online PR to have something relevant to tweet on launch day. You’re more likely to get recognition and retweets if you plan ahead like this and tweet about something everyone’s talking about.

I feel like Joan would absolutely love this, and pretty sure she’d want someone to keep her humor/one-liners alive through her social media!

  4. great posting thanks

You mean celebrities don’t actually post their own tweets? What’s next, there’s no Santa Claus?

  6. I don’t think anyone is running it, that’s the problem.

At least it wasn’t sent from a Samsung Galaxy

I wonder if Rivers’ estate is going to have to repay the money for this endorsement?

I know sheep are pretty gullible but it’s pretty good bet that Rivers isn’t using an iPhone.

I mean, the iphone sucks in this life so it’s got to be worse in the hereafter !

That’s pretty sad that celebrities pay agencies to send their tweets.

They got the image wrong too – that phone was released in 2011…
