Apple releases OS X Yosemite Public Beta 6 to match latest developer GM

Apple today released the sixth public beta of the upcoming OS X Yosemite to AppleSeed testers. The build number is 14A388b, which coincides with last week’s OS X Yosemite Golden Master Candidate 3.0 release for registered developers. Apple plans to provide final details on OS X Yosemite at the October 16th event, then release it as soon as later that date.

    still no handoff on yosemitie

    • dree (@haus_of_audree) - 10 years ago

There is no handoff on beta versions

      • Landy (@Soydepr) - 10 years ago

        why? whats the reasoning

      • marcuscnelson - 10 years ago

There’s no Handoff because Apple decided to remove it so they could have that feature ready for the full version.

      • I have it in the candidate form… Not sure about the Beta version. Will say it works great and is convenient!

    • MGhostSoft - 10 years ago

Handoff works fine to me except that I’m not able to send / receive SMS. Other stuff including phone calls and app continuity works great.

      • Semaan Kawar - 10 years ago

when iOS 8.1 is relased which is on the 20th, you will have a settings option which will you be able to connect your phone sms messages with your macbook.

Won’t let me download the latest build; says “This redemption code has already been used.”

    • ifunography - 10 years ago

I believe you have to update through the Mac App Store (it should show up under the “Updates” tab).

    • Josh Allan (@Jallan0) - 10 years ago

That happened with me but check in your downloads on the app store and it will be there for you to press download.

    I have Handoff working fine!

There are guides online on how to do this. You need to have FaceTime working on both devices, connected to WIFI and Bluetooth.

    • Landy (@Soydepr) - 10 years ago

thats just one aspect and yes that works, but not for other apps

    • totencough - 10 years ago

Bluetooth is absolutely not necessary for calls to your iPhone. I’ve got my Bluetooth turned off on both devices and can make and receive calls just fine. I also get calls to my other iPod Touch without Bluetooth.

For other handoff features, it might be necessary, but I haven’t tested it yet.

      • Max Mars (@devianter) - 10 years ago

there are no “other” handoff features. handoff is handoff. phone calls and sms are continuity, not handoff

      • M - 10 years ago

Max Mars: Wrong. Continuity is an umbrela concept that includes handoff, as well as SMS syncing, etc.

    • Bluetooth needs to be on for handoff to function properly. The devices will auto-find each other. Through another forum, I also found that you need to be logged in to iCloud with your iCloud.com email; not your primary email. My MacBook as well as my iPad will work as a phone when my iPhone is on the same WiFi, and I have been able to use handoff for email, Safari, and iMessage on all my devices.
This works with the Yosemite beta, as well as the general release, and iOS 8.0.2.
SMS messages are supposed to be available when iOS 8.1 is released on Monday (Oct 20)

  4. So.. no Yosimite release on thursday i reckon?

I do not have a update available.. I’m stuck at Beta 4.. Does anyone has a good tip?
    Where can I Update ( beside ~ Appstore/Updates ) ?

    • Ben Olney (@BenOlney23) - 10 years ago

If you obtained your copy of Yosemite through the genuine process then you should have updates available in the App Store. Otherwise you will have to wait until its released to the general public

“…then release it as soon as later that date.”

Yeh, right mate, we know what you mean. Thousands wouldn’t, though.

I only just got seeded beta 5 and you’re all getting 6… ??? I’m I a second class citizen or something? haha ;p

Is anyone having crashing issues with Beta’s 5 & 6? Beta 4 worked flawlessly. I upgrade to 5 and throughout the day, my Mac would reboot several times. Thought 6 would fix the issue, but I was just typing a long and BANG! Black screen, and system rebooted. Thought it may have been related to the “energy settings” where I have it set to shut off my monitors after like 15 mins of non-use, but that’s not it. Just curious if others are having an issue.

Very pleased with latest version. Earlier versions had some series bugs.

Ever since I updated to PB5 my Finder sidebar switched to Italian language wtf

  11. Since beta 6, Mail has gone back to being slow again. Just like the early beta builds. Beta 5 Mail was way faster.

  12. I am running the public beta on a 13″ Macbook Pro with only 4 GB of RAM. I had memory leaks when using web browsers previously. So far, it’s working good. I would notice the RAM available going down very very quickly when browsing, and now it’s holding steady between 1.5 and 2 GB.

woke up this morning to see beta 6 has been installed. graphics/animation speeds have been improved dramatically. However there is a long standing bug that has existed throughout the beta process where connecting to an external display disables audio controls. plugging in headphones is the only way to regain audio control. I’m starting to think that this is either just a really low priority or it is part of some new “feature”.

    • Dennis Wall - 10 years ago

How are you connecting the external display? I’m on a MBA with an external display connected via a DVI to thunderbolt adaptor and my audio controls have always worked. Currently on GM Candidate Version 3.

    • Carl Hezel - 10 years ago

I’m running beta 6 on 2 GB of ram with a 2 GHZ processor core 2 duo. Dude it’s a beta

  14. Michael Greenberg - 10 years ago

I am properly registered as a Public Beta user. I also am stuck at Beta 4. Even in purchases, Beta 5 does not appear. It appears in update, pretends to download for a second and then stops. I even redownloaded the system in recovery mode, and Beta 4 was what came back….I see others are having this problem but nobody is answering them. I registered and re-registered two apple IDs today and still stuck on Beta 4

Is it just me or are anyone else’s calculator and weather widgets in the notification center gone since update to the public beta 6?
