Dropbox’s Mailbox iOS app updated w/ customizable swipes & iPhone 6 UI as Mac app enters open beta

Dropbox updated its Mailbox app today with some necessary features and fixes. The update now includes the ability to customize your swipes. Also, new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus owners will appreciate the optimized UI for bigger displays. Finally, Dropbox has squashed some bugs in Push and otherwise improved the overall performance.

Dropbox’s Mailbox is still only currently for Gmail and iCloud accounts, but the company reminds us again that other email platforms are on the way.

In addition to the updated iPhone and iPad version, the beta version for the Mac is now open to anyone following a public beta coin system for testers before.

Mailbox [Free, App Store] is described as “a completely redesigned inbox that makes email light, fast, and mobile-friendly. Quickly swipe messages to your archive or trash. Scan an entire conversation at once with chat-like organization. Snooze emails until later with the tap of a button — they’ll return to your inbox automatically so you can focus on what’s important now.  Mailbox checks your email from the cloud and delivers it to your phone securely. Now with Auto-swipe, Mailbox learns from your swipes and snoozes to automate common actions. Mute that conversation you don’t care about, snooze messages from your friend to this evening, or route all of your receipts to a list — automatically. Mailbox’s delightful UI and smart features make getting to zero — and staying there — a breeze. After you experience a clean inbox, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.”

I used to like Mailbox until it became overly-integrated with Dropbox. Then I became concerned about Dropbox, Inc. having control over another key to my email content and sticking it all into a single dossier along with the documents I store in dropbox. One compromise there and I’d have a ton of cleanup to do.

Instead what I do now is I simply use Apple Mail. Yeah, the mail is still stored in the cloud, but at least it isn’t commingled with everything I do.

  2. Mailbox used to be great. I stopped using it and jumped to Acompli which has been amazing since I also have an Outlook email address for work. I wonder if Mailbox is any better now, their App Store reviews are not good.

The app currently averages 4.5 stars on almost 58K reviews. Not sure which app store you’re referring to.

I am waiting for them to add Hotmail….. until then I will not be using :/

  4. Swipe gestures :’short-swipe Right’ ,’left long-swipe’ etc..uncustomizable..I tried 10 times.
if you pick a ‘List’ folder ‘To Read’ everything with that gesture goes there but not offer you “show picker” options.
    thats its an issue.
