Move over, Samsung: Lenovo takes the prize for most shameless Apple ripoff

If imitation truly is the sincerest form of flattery, then the designers at Lenovo must adore the iPhone 6.

Samsung has caught a lot of flak for—and been taken to court over—some of its iPhone-like smartphone design choices, but nothing the Korean company has ever produced comes close to the shamelessly derivative Lenovo S90. Not only does the S90 seem to take more than a few design cues from Apple’s latest smartphone, but its entire advertising campaign seems to be a carbon copy of Apple’s own.

Take, for example, the image above (found on Weibo, via PhoneArena). If it looks a little familiar to you, that might be because it’s the exact same thing you’ll find on Apple’s iPhone webpage. There are about ten of these images total, and nearly all of them look like they were ripped right from Apple’s website.

Among the images you’ll find a breakdown of the layers that make up the phone’s display, side-by-side shots of two different size phones (even though there’s only one model of the S90), a straight view of the side of the phone with the device’s measurements above it, two images with expanded views of the camera’s lenses (one for the front camera, and one for the rear), and many more.

As was mentioned above, these images are greatly aided by the fact that the S90 looks almost exactly like the iPhone 6 sans the branding. There are some more noticeable differences on the front, like the design of the earpiece and camera, as well as the distinct lack of a home button in favor of the typical Android controls, but the back of the phone erases any possibility of a coincidentally similar design.

And yes, this is the same Lenovo that hired Ashton Kutcher as a “product engineer” after he portrayed Apple co-founder Steve Jobs on the big screen.

You can see the entire gallery of photos below. You’ve probably already seen them on Apple.com, though.

wow … this is just pathetic. Don’t these designers and engineers have any pride in their work?

    • jrox16 - 10 years ago

      Nope

    • myke2241 - 10 years ago

Profit over Pride! worry about the suits later.

    • puri517 - 10 years ago

i think they did it because the want trick customers who don’t really good in tech. it’s just a trick and i think Apple lawyers should stop it!

      • Exactly. This should not be accepted!

      • TechPeeve (@TechPeeve) - 10 years ago

anybody the cheers for lawyers to do anything should wear a shock collar

      • giskardian - 10 years ago

Shock collar for cheering lawyers? How about a shock collar for his writing skill? No grammar whatsoever, it’s like he’s farting words at me!

    • Benji (@f88) - 10 years ago

      They even copy Apple’s slogan
      Apple: Bigger than bigger
      Lenovo: Prettier than prettier

    • They don’t care about pride. They care about money. After having worked in manufacturing for 6 years and dealing with factories, Asians in general are not creative people and don’t have the same moral values we have.

  2. RP - 10 years ago

..at least they made the band on the back look better

    • thecodee - 10 years ago

      And no protruding camera.

      • hi (@SteelFlexInc) - 10 years ago

Despite being a 13MP sensor, quality might not be as good as the 6/6 Plus since the lens and sensor area are most likely smaller, allowing less light in

      • drhalftone - 10 years ago

I’m sure it takes great pictures and gets good reception.

      • dylankiel63 - 10 years ago

This article is a Fail. It is thin rectangle as are most phones. The iPhone display is far more refined than this phone and Lenovo have done a better job with the camera and antenna bands. In the end, my Toyota sure looks like a Honda but the cars are different.

      • John (@jrgibson1) - 10 years ago

How is this even a thing?
Don’t people remember the iPod touch has a protruding camera.

        This isn’t new.

      • Alex (@Metascover) - 10 years ago

Every time I see that protruding camera, my heart aches.

      • liquidwolverine1 - 10 years ago

I am glad they didn’t sacrifice the camera for design. No way around it, cameras need glass. Perhaps they didn’t need to make the phone as thin though.

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

The camera in the 6 Plus is astounding and finally what I’ve been dreaming about in a “phone camera” for years. It can stick out all it wants.

      • Gustavo Silva - 10 years ago

There is too much fuss about the protuding camera… I can guarantee you, you won’t even notice it while holding or using the phone.

  3. gunston - 10 years ago

    And using Android OS

  4. prolango - 10 years ago

What do you mean by “iPhone 6 sans the branding.”

    • drhalftone - 10 years ago

Looks just like an iPhone 6 but without the Apple logo on the back.

      • dylankiel63 - 10 years ago

Not even close! Come on! BTW, China can humble any North American company and they do so by walking to their own drum. China is Japan 2.0

      • drhalftone - 10 years ago

dylankiel63 is right. I can access any US movie, even ones still in the theater, from Chinese web servers in any video file format I want, all for free. Now that is ingenuity that you just can’t expect from an American.

    • Michael Smith - 10 years ago

Ah, but is it like the iPhone 6 sans bending?😜

      • herb02135go - 10 years ago

So this copies the iphone which copied Samsung.
        And the sheep are whining.

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Sheep? You do nothing except come here and spread lies. Do you not realize how retarded you sound? What keeps you coming back? The pay, I’m guessing. No one would do what you do unless you were being paid to do it.

      • paulywalnuts23 - 10 years ago

Herb the turd…. He always makes me laugh with is Android slanted propaganda..

      • repentantgamer - 10 years ago

I like how Samsung has paid herb so much that he no longer understands the concept of linear progression of time.

  5. jackyharuhiko - 10 years ago

The tagline æŻ”çŸŽæ›ŽçŸŽ means “More beautiful than beautiful”, which is of course copied from the iPhone 6’s “Bigger than bigger”

  6. xprmntr - 10 years ago

The ever present Chinese knockoffs continue

  7. uniszuurmond - 10 years ago

Better design than Apple, even if it was copied.

    1. Cleaner band desing on the back.
    2. Non protruding camera.
    3. Camera radius aligns with phone’s corner.
    4. Neater button design, with two buttons alike.
    5. Central speaker with camera and proximity sensor either side.

    • herb02135go - 10 years ago

If it’s am improvement then how can it also be a copy?
This website is just click bait.

      • 89p13 - 10 years ago

Says the biggest troll on this site! Herb – go haunt the Lenovo site and spout your “Samesung Saves The World” crap over there.

      • 89p13 - 10 years ago

Wait – I see it, Herb!

You’re just upset that Lenovo didn’t copy Samesung . . . . . which is, itself, a copy of the iPhone.

Lesson learned – Why copy a copy (samesung) when you can copy the Original (iPhone).

      • Now shamesung will copy a copy and will say it’s not a copy of iPhone however everyone knows how crap chinese and korean companies are.

      • 311sie - 10 years ago

I know right? Doesn’t it just makes you want to leave an never come back and post again? We’ll miss you buddy!

  8. yuniverse7 - 10 years ago

Seriously, China? You’re even worse than Samsung! You’ve been known to make fake bags, clothes, and even wines, but being this blatant? Wow…

  9. cankoklu - 10 years ago

Now all they need is a launch event where Ashton Kutcher shops up wears a black turtleneck..

  10. herb02135go - 10 years ago

Many people here think this phone looks better than iphone

    • 89p13 - 10 years ago

And Everyone here thinks you work for Samesung. Troll on, little man, troll on!

    • rettun1 - 10 years ago

I believe the focus is more on the uncanny advertising imagery, with the similar look of the phone to the iphone being secondary.

  11. Oflife (@oflife) - 10 years ago

Very very surprised at Lenovo doing this. I’m typing this on one of their Yoga 2 Pro 13 convertible laptops, and like all other Lenovo products, (phones included until now), it’s design and marketing bares no resemblance to anything Apple like at all. So, either Lenovo are intentionally trying to attract young Chinese from the iPhone 6 market with a cheaper lower spec physically similar phone (in which case they are not really competing, just selling a knock off) – or management have lost the plot, or both. Lenovo are inviting a lawsuit, which in fact will harm their credibility and Motorola, which is a pity because the latter are an original and innovative company with a fine pedigree.

  12. Wow, those companies chinese and korean countries have no pride. Copying everything they can. Block them from the world!

  13. Everyone will borrow one thing here and one thing there from each other and people will say “oh well you know they stole that from Android!” or “the lollipop multi-tasking style is from iOS Safari tabs!” bla bla. And to be honest with you, I am fine with that, I do not care. Small things that makes both operating systems better, go ahead! I don’t want either of them to fall behind or become worse, both should be awesome. But copying a phone to this extent, and not only stop there but make a f*cking identical marketing campaign? This REALLY affects how I feel about Lenovo, ew.

    • nickjeremiah - 10 years ago

Lenovo started losing me when they made shit laptops… Now they’ve completely lost me. If it’s indeed legit and they aren’t doing it ‘Just’ to troll Apple, then they are a pathetic company and need to leave.

  14. Alex (@Metascover) - 10 years ago

The worst thing is that people keep referencing this company as if it’s an example of success to follow.

  15. davem75 - 10 years ago

    But does it bend

  16. Matthew Sims - 10 years ago

    China

  17. patstar5 - 10 years ago

    Where can I buy one?

  18. nickjeremiah - 10 years ago

I reckon Lenovo have done this because Apple is starting to get larger and more popular in China and they aren’t liking it. So they’ve said “HEY, we have an ‘iPhone’ that runs Android” to try and win back the consumers they could possibly lose.

  19. Viliger Black - 10 years ago

PLEASE TIM …., BURY these pathetic parasitic people in law suits !!

  20. At least the camera doesn’t stick out like a 5 year old designed it.

  21. matthewr1990 - 10 years ago

    I’m not even mad… Im impressed 😂

  22. Bryan Hough - 10 years ago

This is actually what I’ve always wanted, honestly. It’s got the beautiful iPhone hardware design without the Fisher-Price iOS software! Me personally, I’m always drawn to the beauty of Apple’s iPhones but twice I’ve tried iOS and had to go back to Android because I need “big boy” software. iOS is fine if you’re a kid or a baby boomer who barely knows how to use the phone, but for real power users, it’s Android or bust.

    • I think you’re mistaken between properly designed to be effortless and a kid OS.

Doesn’t mean that because you can’t change the font out of the box it’s not a big boy OS.
List 1 thing you can do that I can’t..

      • Bryan Hough - 10 years ago

I realize that some things got added in iOS 8 so I’m speaking to my last experience with an iPhone. This was an iPhone 5s that I got shortly after they dĂ©buted last year. I’m a sucker for nice hardware and I thought the 5s was beautiful, so I got one. I wound up returning it and getting another Moto X. One of the biggest pain points for me was the lack of actionable notifications, I remember that for sure. Also, having a Moto X, I had become very used to Active Notifications showing up in an ambient mode on my screen. Something that even WINDOWS PHONE can do. Not with the iPhone, I had to pick it up and turn it on each time. I am in the group of people who regularly use voice actions and Siri is complete garbage compared to Google Now. Siri is a complete waste of time when compared side by side. Speaking of Google Now, after having it since Android 4.1, it’s ingrained into my daily life and routines. I need it. I realize that there’s a Google Now app on iOS but it doesn’t work the same. This is also why I love my Moto 360 watch. And I feel like Google Now and it’s contextual awareness it what will separate Android Wear watches from the Apple Watch. I used Google Wallet tap and pay regularly and I missed it when I bought a stupid iPhone that didn’t have a ducking NFC chip in it. (I’m well aware that Apple has copied that now, don’t worry). I could go on, but listen folks, I’m not an Apple hater. I use a Mac at home and I am a HUGE fan of Apple hardware. But ANYBODY that’s used flagship Android phones for years will have a hard time dumbing down to iOS. iOS is a smartphone OS with training wheels and eventually you’ll graduate to Android. If you don’t think that iOS is inferior to Android then you haven’t used a flagship Android for any regular period of time. Listen, I WANT to like iPhones, I have tried to switch twice because I think the hardware is so superior, but iOS renders them useless for me. Just one man’s opinion.

      • giskardian - 10 years ago

Mostly agree with Hough. Android feels more like use OS X to me than does iOS. Apple are just too controlling, too limiting.

That said, I gave Apple one last chance with a 6+. I activated mine today, and if I’m not impressed in a week I guess I’ll send it back for some Android device. Not a Samsung – they have an ugly, hideous UX. Maybe a Nexus 6 but what if it has the random reboot bug?

The truth is, mobile tech needs another ten years to mature. It feels like computers did in the early 90s when you had to save constantly to a floppy for fear of crashes.

    • Don’t worry, keep hitting ok at the force close dialogue, you’ll get to post a reply someday :P

  23. leifashley - 10 years ago

I hope Apple sued them into bankruptcy… One can draam

  24. Fallenjt JT - 10 years ago

Let me know when this phone can even make it out of China. It’s just that it comes from Lenovo…But I guess China is China…no matter big or small company, the thinking is the same: Shameless.

  25. Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

That’s plain and simply disgusting. And here I was sending people who wanted a PC instead of Mac to go with Lenovo because of their “quality”.

NOT ANYMORE!!! From now on, the ONLY brand I recommend is Apple! Screw the PC and Android world and their counterfeiting asswipes!

  26. rlowhit - 10 years ago

The thing is this is so prevelant in Asian countries most consumers are not duped by this type of advertising. It makes the consumer that much more observant to what they are buying.

  27. Unto Toivainen - 10 years ago

How long have we known what iPhone 6 looks like? … This Lenovo phone has been in pipeline little longer than couple of moths.

The style of images is from Apple’s play book but those images of phone are nothing special …
    – “Explosion” view of camera is typical … for example Nokia has used exactly the same way to visualize how many lenses they have.
    – Side view is always the same …

  28. Gustavo Silva - 10 years ago

Hoping Tim picks up Steve’s torch and sues the hell out of them.

  29. e (@coffipls) - 10 years ago

Im not as surprise as i use to be when i hear about Apple products being copied, especially after i heard about the fake Apple Stores in China a while back. i mean come on… they copied a whole store to the point that some of the employees thought they were actually working for Apple.
