Discover announced today that it’s made a deal with Apple to join the other three big card companies already offering support for the company’s new payments service, Apple Pay. That means that starting this fall, Discover cardholders will finally be able to add their cards to the service and make contactless, NFC-based payments using iPhone and Apple Watch, as well as make payments within apps supporting the platform on all iOS devices.
Discover credit cardmembers will still receive all of their current benefits, including Cashback Bonus® and the new Freeze It® security tool that allows them to stop any new purchases, cash advances and balance transfers when they temporarily misplace their cards… As part of the agreement, Discover Network will enable eligible financial institutions, including Discover Debit issuers, to let their card holders use Apple Pay.
Discover will join other card issuers— Visa, Mastercard and American Express— already offering Apple Pay support through a number of bank and credit union partners across the US. The Apple Pay expansion to include Discover cards this fall follows a recent report that Apple is in talks to take the service international starting with Canada later this year.
Most recently, Apple added another 30 new banks and credit unions to its list of institutions supporting Apple Pay bringing the total to over 200 across the country. The banks and credit unions on the list all offer varying levels of support and in some cases on certain card types for certain customers.

A little late in the game. I’ve pretty much moved onto using other cards exclusively. Suppose it’s good for those with business accounts that are tied to Discover.
what a great news for cardholders
I love my Discover card, and I’m happy to see movement on this. But seriously? This fall?
They are really dragging their feet on this.
Probably cause they just got the agreement done and now Discover needs to build out the infrastructure. They announced before infrastructure because Discover users have been bombarding the company to join ApplePay
That and like the previous poster, jumping ship to other card companies.
This is great to get completeness of the credit card networks. I think the technical challenges of getting Discover’s network in the loop are great. I also believe Discover does some credit card payment processing so this might also help with merchants, although that growth has been excellent. Still a ways to go.
There are a lot of Discover users. I picked up an American Express, no annual fee, to use with Apple Pay and I will now look at getting Discover before the fall. The ability to easily switch between cards in Apple Pay on phone and I presume watch will make optimizing benefits that much easier.
It”s nice that it works with the Discover CREDIT Card now. However the blanket statements that apple pay accepts Discover, overlooks the fact they have not added the Discover Debit cards to Apple Pay yet. I like the whole idea of the extra security layer Apple Pay offers, and use it with my Discover Credit card, but wish I could add my Discover Bank debit card.
