Apple Pay comes to over two dozen more banks and credit unions [U: TD Canada site says ‘coming soon’]

After a quiet period between the last set of new banks and iOS 9’s public release, Apple has updated its list of Apple Pay participating banks to include more than two dozen more additions. If you bank with one of these banks or credit unions, you should now be able to setup Apple Pay in your Wallet app for use on supported iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watch:

Advia Credit Union
AIM Bank
Alma Bank
American Bank & Trust Company
Armstrong Bank
Arvest Bank
BankIowa
Central National Bank
Clear Mountain Bank
EECU
First Advantage Bank
First Kentucky Bank
John Marshall Bank
Justice Federal Credit Union
Kern Federal Credit Union
Kinecta Federal Credit Union
Los Angeles Police Federal Credit Union
Martin Federal Credit Union
Northern Bank & Trust Company
Partners 1st Federal Credit Union
Radius Bank
Republic Bank & Trust
Scottrade
Sharefax Credit Union
Signature Federal Credit Union
Sussex County Federal Credit Union
The First National Bank in Sioux Falls

Washington Trust Bank

The new banks join the hundreds of already-participating institutions across the United States and the United Kingdom. Starting with the recently released iOS 9 update for iPhone and iPad and watchOS 2 update for Apple Watch, Apple Pay now supports credit cards from Discover as well as retail-issued and reward cards for the first time. Apple’s Passbook app picked up a new icon and name, Wallet, to reflect its focus toward Apple Pay.

Apple also recently announced that its mobile payment system will soon be accepted at Starbucks (in-stores), KFC, and Chili’s. Best Buy recently turned on support across its stores just in time for the holiday shopping season. As for Apple Pay’s next country, China is said to be a target. In terms of Apple Pay success, Apple says it’s continuing to see ‘double-digit monthly growth’ with users.

Apple Pay lets your pay securely in stores using your existing credit or debit card with iPhone or Apple Watch; Apple Pay supports in-app payments on iPhone and iPad. Is your bank included on Apple’s latest list, or are you still awaiting your bank to catch up? Let us know below.

Update: Curiously timed, iPhoneinCanda.ca spotted that TD Canada now lists Apple Pay as ‘coming soon’ on its site. 9to5Mac first reported that Apple was in talks with banks in Canada to launch Apple Pay earlier this year, although the target date of March was missed. A later report focused on November for the eventual Apple Pay launch in Canada.

No word on the other additions to Wallet that WWDC mentioned, huh? Store cards, etc. You would have thought since those stores largely control their cards, they would have been on board for iOS 9 launch. My gut is that, in typical retail fashion, they still haven’t finished their upgrades to their store terminals. Gambling with the fact that they are now on the hook for fraud. The Apple Pay page on Apple.com says this. “Soon you’ll be able to use your favorite store credit cards — like Kohl’s Charge or JCPenney Credit Card — and get all the benefits when you use them with Apple Pay.”

Also, the rewards cards and ability to automatically redeem rewards – what is the hold up on this? Again, from the Apple Pay page on Apple.com “Add rewards cards, like Dunkin’ Donuts DD Perks, Walgreens Balance Rewards, and MyPanera, to your Wallet app and soon you’ll be able to receive and redeem rewards automatically when you pay with Apple Pay.”

More banks and credit unions every day! Yeah!

Too bad there are almost no new RETAILERS accepting the damn thing. Looking more like NFC payments are a fad that’s fading fast. If I have to still carry my cards around for the foreseeable future what’s the point other than impressing some cutie at the cash register. Minimum wage clerks apparently don’t have a clue how to process NFC, retailer’s terminals are set up wrong and ask for PINs and signatures. Nothing is consistent, nothing is standardized.

Why suffer embarrassment at the counter when Pay chokes for whatever reason. Sliding a card works almost every time.

We have had NFC in the UK for years. It came in without a hitch – it has nothing to do with ‘minimum wage clerks’ as it;s actually easier and quicker to process NFC (they don’t need to do anything)

    …and 0 more retailers.

Apple also needs to work with mom & pop shops to help get them on board, not just big retailers.

I have decided to use it at every place by default and figured out many places do accept it but just don’t know.

ApplePay is amazing….I LOVE it! It would be so much more useful if it’s accepted at more locations, and there were just as many announcements of additional locations as there are of new banking institutions.

There are 2 of the top 50 Credit Unions, EECU (Educational Employees) and Kinecta plus ScottTrade. ScottTrade along with ETrade, Charles Schwab and Fidelity give good financial Industry coverage.

Arvest bank is very interesting because that is the bank controlled by the Walton Family (Walmart). I have seen evidence of Walmart testing Contactless in the North Dallas area. Walmart has the most experience of any retailer with the Chip/Signature Chip/PIN EMV cards and knows their strengths and weaknesses. With card present rates available it doesn’t seem like there’s any reason for Walmart not to roll out the most secure solution, tokenized Apple Pay.

Yes, there needs to be more vendors and it would help if the announced vendors such as Best Buy, Jersey Mikes, Kohls, JC Penney, Home Depot would roll out their solutions. And vendors like Albertsons which is about 75% done would complete their implementation.

But even after the October 2015 liability shift, only one major vendor is operational and supporting Chipped Card based on the EMV standard in the US, Walmart. Apple Pay and other contactless payment systems (Android Pay) are based on the EMV standard.

Target is saying they will soon roll out EMV and Whole Foods says it will also roll it out soon.

The good news is the POS terminal infrastructure is rapidly being put in place to support both Chipped EMV cards and Contactless including Apple Pay. It just hasn’t been turned on yet.

Besides upgrading the POS terminals they have to be facing the user for Chipped cards. When using a chipped card, the customer doesn’t relinquish their card. This is another factor that is changing.

So the pace of Apple Pay adoption is tied up with the overall pace of Chipped/ EMV card adoption which is slow. The merchants and the banks are playing a game of chicken that will be interesting to watch.

I use the Mobile Pay app and the Mastercard Contactless web site to see which stores accept Apple Pay and Contactless, it is not fool proof but I have made over 200 Apple Pay transactions.

The main reason to use Apple Pay is the security. The tokenization and Device Account Number features are revolutionary and will be incorporated, I believe, in any future payment system. A secondary benefit is seeing purchases on your phone for verification. The convenience is nice but if it wasn’t the most secure way to pay, I would not use it. But since it is, I use it all of the time.

What kind of evidence do you see that tells you that Wal-Mart is testing Contactless? If the iSC250 lights up with a green light NFC is turned on, but I have never seen that at a Wal-Mart. I do see a bunch of Wal-Mart near the Dallas area on the MC Contactless locator, so it is quite possible that they are testing it. Also Target has full EMV support but will rollout Apple Pay sometime next year.

  10. My credit union isn’t on yet but they recently updated their website FAQ about it:

“Yes, we are working with Visa® and our processors to enable members to utilize Apple Pay. As of October 1, 2015, it looks like we’re about 90 days away from Apple Pay being functional. We’re also in the process of developing a custom “One Nevada Wallet,” which will have more features than Apple Pay. ”

Their web offerings are good but nothing special so I cannot wait to see what those incredible wallet features will be! My bet is just integration of their rewards/cash back system in there

It’s surprising how slow the US is to adopt new payment technologies. In Europe you can pay with Chipped cards for about 20 years now, and in Japan you can pay using your phone for small items almost everywhere.
