Now that iOS 9.1 is out the door, Apple turns its attention to 9.2 internally

With yesterday’s release of iOS 9.1, Apple has finally pushed out the last bit of iPhone and iPad software that it was publicly testing. With that out of the way, the company has internally shifted its focus to the next mobile OS release on its roadmap: iOS 9.2.

As seen in the chart below, 9to5Mac has recently seen a significant uptick in the number of readers running iOS 9.2, indicating that the software has moved into wider testing among more Apple employees.

While iOS 9.1 introduced over 150 new emoji icons and Wi-Fi calling on Sprint devices, iOS 9.2 will likely be focused more on resolving issues discovered with the iPad Pro. That device will ship with iOS 9.1 pre-installed, so a quick software update after release to address outstanding bugs seems likely.

However, the exact changes in 9.2 are yet to be revealed, and it could include new features or enhancements that Apple has yet to announce.

As with all recent iOS updates, it should enter a developer beta very soon, then enter a public beta testing period a few weeks before release, though there’s no indication of exactly when this process will start.

Isn’t it time for iOS 10 beta 1 already??

    • mikhailt - 9 years ago

      /s?

iOS X beta 1 is coming next June/July timeframe, just like the last 4-5 iOS major updates.

I think he meant an internal build of iOS 10–not the developer beta. I think those usually start showing up around February.

    • *bug fixes and improvments

  2. Can I ask something, why don’t Apple masks it’s user-agent of unreleased iOS.
or do they not make an effort since obviously 9.2 is coming and in it’s UAT stage.

What’s the point? Less code they have to change, the better.

It is not like if they did mask the iOS version, we wouldn’t know they’re not working on iOS 9.2 and iOS 10 right now.

Why? It is not like this is a state secret like the Manhattan Project.

Confirmation! After much speculation in the tech press, and indications that Apple would soon be discontinuing the iPhone, we can now confirm that Apple will continue to develop it’s most valuable product.

Uhm, little bit off-topic, but is that lightning cable in the picture official Apple, maybe with the 6s series?

    • florinnica - 9 years ago

      Unfortunately, it is not :(

      • o0smoothies0o - 9 years ago

        It looks horrible.

      • djngoma - 9 years ago

If it’s anything like the other braided cable that was MFi cert’d, then it’s not worth the cash.

I wonder if 9.2 will bring support for store cards and rewards programs in Apple Pay? In theory they are supported in iOS 9.0 and 9.1 or the feature could be added on the backend if not. Since these take a partnership with the brands/companies it’s hard to know for certain. I’m curious as to why there seems to be a delay in rolling out this feature. If it’s the stores dragging their feet or Apple. Kohls put out a press release at the end of September about adding this feature but you still can’t add their card.

When I was first setting up Apple Pay, I couldn’t add any of my rewards program cards. However, when I was messing with Google Wallet, it asked if I wanted to transfer my rewards cards to Apple Pay. I clicked yes and for each rewards card it had the option to add to Apple Pay. After doing so, they now all show up there.

Express app supports store cards. It’s the only app I know of that supports store cards right now.

      • taoprophet420 - 9 years ago

It has a support wallet icon in the App Store like the supports Touch ID or support Apple Watch icons.

      • johnmfoley - 9 years ago

Very cool. I didn’t know there were any yet. Have you tried using it in store?

      • taoprophet420 - 9 years ago

No i Have not tried it in store I mentioned it supporting loyalty cards on10/10 when somebody said store cards and loyalty were not supported yet.

Im surprised there are no more apps or a section in the App store dedicated to loyalty cards like they done with Apple Pay,Passcode or Touch ID in the past.

I think many retailers would adopt Apple pay if it supported their cards and loyalty rewards. I think it would really help adoption of Apple Pay.

All I know is that FINALLY I can use iMessage without having to close and re-open it between texts. Ever since iOS8.x it seems that iMessage became unstable and the keyboard wouldn’t respond, unless you closed it and re-opened it. For a person who texts a bit, this was quite annoying. But, with iOS9.1, this appears to be working as it was expected to work, and was always expected to work.

Why don’t the just give users the option to install OS X on their iPad. Come on people lets lobby for this. OS X will be more useful to me than iOS

After ios 9.1 update on my iphone 6, keyboard does not response while typing the letters y,g,v along with the symbol @. I can’t even sign in to other email address in my mailbox because “@” cannot be typed. Anyone has a solution for this problem??? these letters cannot be typed using any method. I have tried the reset phone method. Also, tried the restore phone from iTunes. but, the keyboard does not work for typing the mentioned letters and symbol.

    please help me ASAP…
