World record podcast Serial back with season 3 on September 20

Serial, a podcast spinoff from This American Life, became a surprise hit back in 2014. Telling the story of an apparent miscarriage of justice in a murder case, Serial topped the iTunes podcast rankings for several weeks …

In all, the podcast was downloaded 175 million times, setting a new world record. It also resulted in the granting of a new trial for the accused, on the basis of ineffective assistance of counsel after the revelation that the lawyer did not question key evidence in the murder trial.

Season 2, telling a different story in the same long-form non-fiction format, landed the following year – and the team has just announced that season 3 begins on September 20.

Serial is heading back to court. This time, in Cleveland. A year inside a typical American courthouse. This season we tell you the extraordinary stories of ordinary cases. One courthouse, told week by week.

Season 1 was one of the most gripping things I’ve ever listened to, and I binged the entire series of twelve episodes in a single weekend. Season 2 didn’t grab me as much, but I’ll certainly be trying season 3.

You can listen to an eight-minute trailer at the podcast website. As well as iTunes and other podcast sites, it will also be available to stream on Pandora.
