With the release of tvOS 17 last year, Apple added native support for VPNs to Apple TV. In the intervening months, we’ve seen a handful of popular VPN services come to the Apple TV.
Now, Proton VPN is getting in on the fun and has officially launched its first Apple TV app. Proton VPN is also now available on Apple Vision Pro.
In a blog post, Proton explains:
Today, we’re excited to release the Proton VPN Apple TV app. Among the most requested features from our community, this app allows you to easily and securely watch your favorite shows, films, and sports events on your big-screen TV via your Apple TV, no matter where you are. The Apple TV app is available to everyone with a paid Proton VPN plan.
Proton VPN offers 6,200 servers across 100 countries, and the Apple TV app allows you to pick from all of them.
Proton VPN can be downloaded from the App Store, including the new releases for Apple TV and Vision Pro.
You can sign up for Proton VPN on the company’s website and save 55% on a two-year plan or 50% on a one-year plan.
Why use a VPN on Apple TV?
There are a few different reasons you might want to use a VPN on Apple first. First, all of the normal privacy benefits of using a VPN also apply to Apple TV. Perhaps more notable, however, is that using a VPN on Apple TV can vastly expand that content that’s available for you to watch.
Streaming services oftentimes restrict certain content to certain geographic regions due to licensing agreements and other arrangements. For example, the catalog of content available on Netflix in the United States is vastly different than the Netflix catalog available in other countries.
Thanks tvOS 17, using a VPN on Apple TV is just as easy as it is on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. All you have to do is download a compatible VPN app from the App Store – such as Proton VPN – and choose your location.
