The problem with traditional enterprise failover
For decades, the standard IT playbook for disaster recovery has been to bring in two different internet service providers. An organization might have a primary fiber connection from one ISP and a secondary cable or fiber connection from another. The firewall handles the failover routing if the primary connection drops.
In theory, this works well. In reality, it often fails when a major issue occurs. Both ISPs typically share the same utility poles or underground conduits leading into the building into the main rack. When a rogue backhoe severs the fiber line down the street, or a tree falls and takes out the poles, it is incredibly common to lose both the primary and backup connections at the exact same time. I had this situation happen to me about a decade ago.
