Disney announces three new Disney+ and Hulu app features

Disney+ and Hulu are on a path toward merging, and to that end, Disney just announced three new features rolling out today for app users, plus another that’s coming soon.

New Disney+ and Hulu features rolling out today, with Live Guide coming soon

The experience of accessing Hulu content in the Disney+ app is easier starting today.

That’s because Disney is launching new features as part of its ongoing integration of Hulu and Disney+.

  • Profile Linking: Hulu subscribers can now link their Hulu profiles to Disney+, which brings their watch history, watchlist, and recommendations into Disney+.
  • Stream Hulu without Disney+ Account: Hulu subscribers can now use the Disney+ app to stream all Hulu content, even if they don’t have a Disney+ account. This is enabled via a unified MyDisney login.
  • New Avatars: Hulu avatars are now available for profiles in the Disney+ app, joining the existing Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars-themed avatars

Disney also says that once profiles are linked, titles watched in the Hulu app will continue syncing to the Disney+ app moving forward.

Additionally, Disney+ will soon start testing a ‘Live Guide’ feature that’s inspired by Hulu.

Disney says the new feature will act as a hub for easily finding live content at any given time. It will include streams like “ABC News Live and Disney+ Playtime for all Disney+ users and ESPN networks for entitled ESPN Unlimited subscribers.”

Finally, Disney confirms that some of the key Hulu integrations not yet in Disney+ will be coming later on:

Additional Hulu features, such as Live TV and add-ons, are still available in the Hulu app and will be coming to Disney+ at a later date.

Following these announcements, Disney told Variety that there are “no current plans to sunset the Hulu app.”

However, with these changes it’s starting to seem like an inevitability. And that’s especially true if the rumored Disney+ ‘super app’ ends up materializing.
