iPhone 6 screen goes under the microscope as new casings show fully assembled device

Earlier today, we discovered a new potential resolution for the iPhone 6: 828 x 1472. This finding came several months after sources first told us that Apple is testing an iPhone 6 resolution of 960 x 1704. Now, phone reseller Feld & Volk has put a purported iPhone 6 screen panel under the microscope and claims that the resolution is the 960 x 1704 that we reported:

MacRumors, on the other hand, analyzed the photo and believes that the actual resolution shown by the microscope is closer to the 828 x 1472 resolution that we discussed this morning. It is possible that Apple goes with both resolutions (one for the 4.7-inch model and another for the 5.5-inch version) or just one across both sizes. We’ll know for sure September 9th.

In related iPhone 6 news from Feld & Volk, the company has published new photos showing the outer shell and the display panel of the device glued together.

These images provide a better picture of what a complete iPhone 6 unit could look like. The company posted one photo on their Instagram page, and MacRumors has a few more shots.

It’s too bad Apple didn’t just go for the industry standard 1080p display. Making life easier for cross platform developers is not something to be avoided at all costs.

But the same resolution on multiple screen sizes leads to just scaling apps up and down instead of actually taking advantage of the extra room.

Apple’s game is probably to keep DPI fairly consistent across screens, and use the new responsive layout tools in iOS 8 to handle the differences in screen size.

Were that the case, we would see an iPad with the same DPI as the retina iPad mini. I prefer the size of text and homepage icons on the smaller screen.

Any word on the iPad Air 2 resolution?

I calculated the ppi by myself, it seems to be 828*1472

Thats just the resolution, not the actual pixel per inch. Lmao

      • Sean Sun (@Sean_zxs) - 10 years ago

I know I use the pic to calculate the ppi to be around 350, which is about the same for 828*1472 for 4.7 inch display.

Something looks off with all these leaks. Either they’re Chinese knockoffs or prototype parts. None of them have the fit and finish of a final product.

That’s because they’re not final, and they’ve probably been through a lot in the leaking process.

828 x 1472 seems unlikely unless there really is no 5.5″ model. Because I find it impossible to believe Apple would have two different resolutions for the two phones. They would keep them the same just like the iPad Air and Mini Retina to keep things simple. 828 x 1472 comes to only 302ppi on a 5.5″ screen. No way Apple would release a 5.5″ iPhone 6 with a 302ppi screen. Samsung would murder them in tacky commercials.

Hahah yeah you’re right about the commercials. I would be embarrassed for them if they released new iPhones without higher PPI though. With iOS 7 came thinner UI and fonts, and thus you can see the pixels even more. It needs to be retina at 8″ at the very least.

Does anyone have more info or pics on how he came to the conclusion that it is 960×1704? Because based on the pic supplied, it is no where near that.

The picture seems to show either 12 or 13 pixels per mm. On a 5.5 screen that works out to 819 to 888, or a on 4.7″ screen 700 to 760 horizontal.

However this might be because the ruler is raised, making the markings of 1mm totally inaccurate. If it was 14 pixels per mm that would be 960 on a 5.5″ screen. But I thought he said he has a 4.7″ screen??

    None of it makes sense.

Also the picture does not even look like a typical display that apple would get. Apple have never done a display like this with twine pixels. My guess is this whole thing is FAKE.

I count 13 pixels/mm which is exactly the same as it is today. As opposed to some of you who don’t see that the 1080p “standard” isn’t necessarily making dev lives easier, this is going to be awesome. Resolution would be the previously reported 13** x 740 or something on the 4.7″. Keeping the same dpi means UI elements would be exactly the same size for all devices, while offering more space for content
