Apple adds new LG 31-inch 4K monitor to list of supported Mac displays

Apple has updated its support document detailing 4K displays with Mac support to add LG’s recently announced 31-inch 4K monitor (31MU97).

LG previously announced that the monitor would be Mac compatible through its Mini DisplayPort or 2 HDMI ports, but Apple notes that it will only be supported on OS X Yosemite. The other monitors on the list are supported with OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 or later.

Apple supports the new LG 4K monitor at either 30Hz or 50Hz refresh rates (30Hz over HDMI and 50Hz over Mini DisplayPort), according to the support document.

So far Apple only officially supports a small number of 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs including the Sharp PN-K321, ASUS PQ321Q, Dell UP2414Q, Dell UP3214Q, and the Panasonic TC-L65WT600.

Apple has yet to update its own Thunderbolt display with a higher resolution comparable to the latest crop of 4K monitors, but it recently released its new 27-inch Retina 5K iMac that will hopefully pave the way for improved support in OS X and an updated standalone display in the near future.

The new LG 31UM97 is available in the US now for $1399 and rolling out to other markets.

Can you use other 4k Display as in VIZIO with Macs?

Apple’s support page for the 27″ retina iMac still says is only supports a maximum of 3840×2160. and there’s a review on Amazon that says this monitor has black bars on either side when connected to a retina iMac plus Apple’s support page specifically states that this monitor is only compatible with iMac computers from late 2013 and newer but doesn’t mention the retina iMac specifically. Therefore I doubt this monitor will work with the retina iMac unfortunately.

Yes, some of the reviews have stated this, but it hasn’t been my experience. I just bought one of these monitors last week and it worked right out of the box at full 4096×2160 resolution (although at 50Hz). I can easily recommend this monitor for the late-2013 MacBook Pro. It is awesome!

A little late to the game here but figured i’d share my experience. I purchased two of the new LG 31MU97s for my new mac pro (trash can) and they’ve been nothing but trouble. once they’re stable and working they’re beautiful, but they constantly…. CONSTANTLY glitch, shut down, belch out static and generally give me headaches. i’m going back and forth with LG tech support, but i’m getting childish amateur questions (are you sure they’re plugged in right?) and i’m at the end of my rope.

It seems to me that Apple has removed the monitor from the supported displays as April 10
