Google updates Hangouts for iOS w/ refreshed UI, multiple photo attachments

Google has updated Hangouts for iOS today with a handful of new features and what it says is an overall improved user experience.

You’ll notice some UI tweaks throughout, like a new menu button in the contact list and a button for quickly starting new conversations. In addition, chat bubbles get a refreshed look, as does the UI for video chat (pictured above). Also new is the ability to attach and send multiple photos at the same time.

Google notes that it’s given the app a brand new attachments UI, which provides users quick access to buttons for photo attachments, location sharing, and emoticons. The dialer has also been refreshed to create a better experience.

The updated Google Hangouts app, version 4.0.0, is available for iPhone and iPad now.

What’s New in Version 4.0.0

• Improved user experience.
• New attachments UI.
• Send multiple photos at once.

Hangouts is one of the worst apps on my phone, would delete it gladly if not for work.

You know what I would really like to get from Google more than this? The ability to use contact groups created and stored in my account on their servers when sending something from Gmail. Do you know how many times I’ve needed to send a quick email (using the Gmail app) to a distribution list and not been able to do so because I don’t know who is in the list?

I actually really like the look of this app, mixes the really good things about FB messenger with a sweet Material design coating. Not that any of my friends use it, but still cool.

  4. – Need ability to REMOVE people from Hangouts chat (mostly a problem for larger group hangouts)

    – Need ability to specify that only the first x notifications of group chat should come through (similar to how Gmail allows you to set an option to only get the first notification for new mail).

Other than that it feels a bit speedier.

If only they had a usable desktop client. They finally updated the Chrome App (still requires chrome to be open and runs in a weird window layer while hogging system resources).

Their 10 year old Google Talk app worked better.
