Update: Dates are returning to 9/21 for most, though some remain at 9/24.
While many pre-order customers around the world have started receiving their iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max orders, some customers in the United States are seemingly facing delivery delays. The issue, which is delaying delivery for many iPhone XS pre-order customers until Monday, September 24th, seems to be the fault of an agreement between Apple and UPS…
Many iPhone XS customers are taking to Twitter this evening to complain that their order has slipped from Friday, September 21st delivery to Monday, September 24th. Interestingly, Apple’s website still indicates that deliveries are on schedule for Friday in these situations.
One Twitter user was able to get in touch with UPS support, who explained that her shipment was delayed because the “shipper has exceeded the maximum volume they have contracted.”
We have a contractual agreement with some shippers, which limits the amount of packages that can be handed over to UPS on any given day. When this amount is exceed, as in this case, the packages may experience delays. We first need to complete those packages that were given to us in previous days before we can export those that were recently shipped.
This response should be taken with a grain of salt at this point, as UPS and Apple representatives have both been silent on the situation. Further, it seems odd that this year of all years would be when Apple hits its “maximum volume” of shipments, as there have certainly been bigger iPhone launches.
It’s quite possible that this is a glitch of some sort and will be resolved shortly. In the meantime, however, it the issue seems to be affecting quite a few iPhone XS customers. Personally, my iPhone XS Max is showing a Friday delivery through Apple’s website, but UPS shows a delay until Monday, September 24th.

@UPSHelp my iPhone was supposed to arrive tomorrow by end of day. My wife’s still is. Mine left Anchorage, AK 4 hours before hers and now is delayed until Monday? What gives?

Hi there @UPS and @UPSHelp! Why is my #iPhone shipment suddenly delayed 'til Monday, and why have all my packages from you lately been delayed? I live in your hometown and am tired of you dropping the damn ball. Please make me happy.
