Canada gets iPhone unlock

Site default logo image

Ooh – following yesterday’s shock victory for the jailbreaking community in the US, in comes more news saying the non-open days of the iPhone may be slowly coming to a close — the iPhone 4 will be sold unlocked in Canada when it goes on sale on Friday.

This means the device, sold through Bell, Rogers and Telus will be available unlocked from the Apple store, that’s so Canadian users can choose their carrier.

Customers will also be able to switch providers whenever they like and use the phone in other countries with SIM cards from local carriers, which will allow them to avoid roaming charges from Canadian providers.

The catch, though, is the phone’s price. The 16-gigabyte unit will sell for $659 while the 32-GB version will cost $779.

Posh NYC restaurant makes iPad its sommelier

Site default logo image

A relatively pleasant start to the day boosted by a good news story about the jolly old iPad and its use as a wireless wine catalogue for use in a swanky NYC restaurant.

Siure, it may be that the South Gate restaurant just off Central Park (154 Central Park South between 6th and 7th Avenues, NYC) may be well beyond my meager budget, but it is nice to think of all those NY socialites buzzing and cooing as they choose their wines using an Apple iPad.

See, South Gate has created its own custom wireless iPad wine tablets exclusively designed to navigate its extensive wine list. The new iPad wine tablet features the SmartCellar application designed by the New York-based company Incentient.

Diners get to choose from 650 choice vintages with detailed info on all the wines and regions. and lots of pretty pictures, as you’d expect from the restaurant with its design credits and “seasonally-inspired modern American menu”.

That’s the story, now let’s all go an hit refresh on the AAPL store, just in case, you know, anything happens there…

Slow iPhone uploads? Problem should be fixed 'in weeks' says AT&T

Site default logo image

If you are one of the million or so people who have been suffering slow uploads on their iPhone as a result of an equipment problem on the ATT network, have no fear, AT&T has “begun” working on a fix.

The issue should be resolved in 2-3 weeks the carrier said.

At issue was a software glitch in equipment provided by Alcatel-Lucent which was slowing speeds.

AT&T said earlier this month that fewer than 2 percent of its wireless customers were affected (statement below). That’s a significant 1.8 million people.

“AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent jointly identified a software defect

OpenGL 4.1 shows itself, like DirectX 11 — but better!

Site default logo image

You know one reason the PC platform doesn’t match the Mac for gaming (tongue in cheek) is its slavish devotion to DirectX 11, but perhaps this will change now Open GL has been updated to become a much better spec.

The Khronos Group today shipped an updated version of Open GL (v.4.1), which can do everything DirectX 11 can do, and adds a few other lovely features, too. Not least seamless enhanced integration with OpenCL for “seamless visual computing”.

(Sure am looking forward to the 3D computing age, just you wait. Apple’s working on it, promise).

OpenGL 4.1 is the sixth update to OpenGL specification in two years, continuing the rapid evolution of this royalty-free specification. This new version continues to maintain full backwards compatibility.

New functionality in the core OpenGL 4.1 specification includes:

  • Full compatibility with OpenGL ES 2.0 APIs for easier porting between mobile and desktop platforms;
  • The ability to query and load a binary for shader program objects to save re-compilation time;
  • The capability to bind programs individually to programmable stages for programming flexibility;
  • 64-bit floating-point component vertex shader inputs for higher geometric precision;
  • Multiple viewports for a rendering surface for increased rendering flexibility.

Khronos has simultaneously released a set of ARB extensions to enable as much OpenGL 4.1 core functionality as possible on previous generation GPU hardware; providing maximum flexibility and platform coverage for application developers.

Jailbreaking and carrier unlocking now legal in the US?

Site default logo image

Here’s some breaking news from the AP:

Owners of the iPhone will be able to break electronic locks on their devices in order to download applications that have not been approved by Apple. The government is making that legal under new rules announced Monday….Another exemption will allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.

Apple has previously argued that Jailbreaking is illegal under the DMCA. Interesting news, the whole ruling is here. We’re following (here?) to see how this shakes out for Apple and the industry.

Also, some new stuff for those who like to make backupDVDs of purchased Video/Music:

(1) Motion pictures on DVDs that are lawfully made and acquired and that are protected by the Content Scrambling System when circumvention is accomplished solely in order to accomplish the incorporation of short portions of motion pictures into new works for the purpose of criticism or comment, and where the person engaging in circumvention believes and has reasonable grounds for believing that circumvention is necessary to fulfill the purpose of the use in the following instances:

(i)  Educational uses by college and university professors and by college and university film and media studies students;
(ii) Documentary filmmaking;
(iii) Noncommercial videos.

Wake up to an Apple planet, PC world

It really is time to wake up and smell the coffee. The iPad is eating up the netbook market, Mac sales are rising inexorably and the iPhone is not just a phone but the world’s most popular hand-held computer. Add it all up (properly) and Apple is facing off against HP for the bragging rights to being the world’s biggest (number one) PC maker. Wake up to an Apple planet, PC world!

(We’d like to observe that what this means is that people in 17 more countries can hope to get one of the few available units in sales channels as demand continues to exceed supply).

Here’s what the folks from Apple is saying:

iLife '10 gets August 7 launch rumor, iTunes Extras authoring app?

Site default logo image

The next edition of iLife is expected, this morning we learn that the software is scheduled to ship “on August 7”.

French Mac website, Mac4Ever.com has announced the date, saying iLife 10 (or, perhaps, 11) will be 64-bit compatible and will ship with a mysterious new application.

That mysterious app could perhaps be support for the creation of iTunes LP and iTunes Extras packages, giving consumers a way to share detailed digital albums featuring all manner of multimedia assets. This software was briefly discussed in December last year.

This would perhaps replace iDVD, which hasn’t seen any significant recent updates.

This will allow artists to create their own iTunes LPs and submit these directly to Apple from the application, which will form part of iLife 2010. (We reckon it will also let consumers create mixed-media assets a la iTunes Extras, and suspect we

Microsoft inviting Mac users to join Office 2011 beta testing gang

Site default logo image

Microsoft is doing its best to tempt users to Office 2011 for Mac, despatching invitations to join the Mac 2011 beta testing cycle to some users.

The software is apparently currently at Build 100709. Invitations are being despatched at this time. There’s several new features to the new productivity suite, as detailed here.

As you may expect, restrictions apply. Sign up to the beta if you can promise and agree as follows:

“The Office for Mac 2011 beta is closed to the public, which means ALL Office 2011 tools and features are confidential and proprietary to Microsoft. By participating in the beta, you consent to a non-disclosure agreement which includes all forms of communication including print, broadcast, electronic, internet publications, social media networking sites, blogs, and verbal disclosure. The NDA will not lift until the product is public later this year. We will update on timing closer to the date.

RIP: Why the iPad 'killers' are already dead

Site default logo image

It is time to face it: With iPads selling in their millions and only today introduced in the busy Asia-Pacific markets, Apple has already stolen the tablet/netbook industry. This success breeds tablet component shortages, add the huge iPad mind share and all those promised ‘iPad killers’ are dead before they have even begun.

World's richest corp. sends employees to the garage in attempt to keep relevant in the age of iPhone-ness

Site default logo image

OK, so we know that Microsoft has guaranteed the first 90,000 Windows 7 phone sales (by buying them for its own people), now the Redmond copycat has hitched up its skirts to make a deal with ARM [Ed: Insert Better Analogy Here], and has plans to take the world’s richest corporation back to the garage by encouraging its own staff to, erm, make Win 7 Phone apps.

Nice.

So, if you work for Microsoft you’re going to be asked to develop for the future phone (wonder if this means Micorosft will spew some stat touting just how quickly it managed to build a developer ecosystem?)

As part of the free phone deal, employees are being asked to evangelize the device to their friends and family.

They also get access to “Develop! A new employee developer programme which makes it much easier for you to develop apps for Marketplace in your spare time.”

Ah, but AAPL’s decision to make its own A4 processor sure will prove a long-sighted on. After all, it wasn’t so long ago that forward momentum on its computing platform was held back by slow processor development on part of IBM and Motorola. The company won’t repeat that one twice. Not in the new and oh-so-important mobile field.

Microsoft’s new deal with ARM confirms that company as a follower. But it also underscores the depth with which Apple management analysts potential threats and the evolution of threats as they laid down their plans for the A4 and other future mobile processors.

Which is to say they saw it coming, and have put together a route to market for proprietary sillicon to give their devices a competitive edge.

(Also consider this: because Apple owns the OS and has control over the processor design used in the mobile devices it makes, it can ensure efficiencies, such as power or graphics management and so on, which cannot possibly be replicated by any competitor — such as Android or Windows 7 Phone — that is attempting to deliver an OS for use on a variety of differently-specced devices. This will serve as a huge advantage in the mobile space, much more so than on the desktop).

The ARM/MSFT deal, then:

“ARM and Microsoft Corp. today announced that they have signed a new licensing agreement for the ARM architecture. The agreement extends the collaborative relationship between the two companies. Since 1997 Microsoft and ARM have worked together on software and devices across the embedded, consumer and mobile spaces, enabling many companies to deliver user experiences on a broad portfolio of ARM-based products.

VIDEO: Don't miss the Darth Vader 'antenna-gate' spoof (s'funny)

Site default logo image

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7BbEkgujzk&w=700&h=415]

Well, unless we find out something else that’s awful, antenna-gate has reached its zenith and is about to fall just behind the horizon lines to disappear into the Apple history books. So, just before it goes, what better than a spoof video featuring no less than Darth Vader giving AAPL a quick call to find out what’s going on.

Watch out for classic lines, including the splendid:

BBC News App hits UK today, iPlayer app is coming…

Site default logo image

BBC News will launch an iPhone and iPad app in the UK from late this afternoon, the broadcaster has announced, following the BBC Trust’s approval of the Corporation’s release of apps for the platforms.

The free-to-download apps for Apple products were originally due to be made available in April 2010. They are already available outside of the UK, though launch here was delayed while the BBC Trust explored the commercial significance of the deal.

BBC will introduce other apps later this year, including apps for iPlayer and BBC Sport. In future, we can expect apps for Android and other smartphone platforms to appear.

BBC Trustee Diane Coyle, who led the review, said:

“The Apps market is rapidly taking off as more people choose to get their news, sport and other online content while they’re on the move. The Trust has a duty to represent the interests of licence fee payers, who will increasingly expect to access BBC content in this way, but also to listen to concerns raised by industry. In this case we have concluded that while the Apps market is developing quickly and we will monitor the launch of BBC Apps, a PVT is not required.”

According to the report commissioned by the Trust.

On the up: Forrester changes tablet industry forecast as iPad sales amaze

Site default logo image

Looky-look, Apple’s changing the game once again — and analysts are having to swiftly change their ideas of how the market works.

Take major market research firm, Forrester, who today admitted the immediate success of the iPad will force it to change its entire tablet computer market forecasts….

In a blog post, analyst Sarah Rotman Epps writes that the iPad is

iPhone v. Android: iPhone users upgrade faster, resent Android and there's twice as many of them — research

Site default logo image

Apple has trained its users well — we’re good and dutiful and ready to update our machines – this will be why nearly half of all iPhone users (and let’s not forget those first-gen users who can’t upgrade) have already updated to iOS 4 — less than one month after release.

These claims come straight out of the research people at Chitika Research. They also reckon 10 per cent of current iOS 4 users have jumped over to 4.0.1.

The survey results are based on a statistically useful nine million iPhone page impressions — that’s people dancing onto a Chitika served ad page.

Founded in 2003, Chitika (pronounced CHIH-tih-ka), is a full-service on-line advertising network serving over 2 billion monthly impressions across more than 80,000 websites.

LG Display says it can't keep up with iPad demand — iPad killers are already dead

Site default logo image

If you were watching you may recall that I argued Apple has already eaten up the iPad ‘killers’ by creating a product so popular it has sucked dry all the display component supply needed for competing devices. That’s likely because the product is so darn popular Apple can barely keep up with demand.

We wake up to a new day and new confirmation Apple’s eating the lunch of a those unborn iPad killers — LG Electronics hs admitted the company can’t even keep Apple supplied with those precious touch screems.

As reported by Reuters
, LG Display CEO Kwon Young-soo said, “Demand (from Apple) keeps growing and we can’t meet it all. Apple may have to delay launches of the iPad for some countries due to tight component supplies and strong demand.

“We are considering increasing production lines for iPad products but overall supply is likely to remain tight until early next year.”

Research firm iSuppli raised this week its forecast for iPad sales by 82 percent to nearly 13 million units this year. Even more interesting, LG will invest 618 billion won in new manufacturing facilities, but will is still planning production cuts this August.

“iSuppli believes that the only limitation on iPad sales now is production, and not demand,” said Rhoda Alexander, director of monitor research for iSuppli. “Apple has taken a very controlled approach introducing this product to new markets, with manufacturing limitations likely being the major inhibitor on how quickly iPad sales expand.”

Not a bad building block for the future, eh?

Apple promotes quality on its exec team

Reports claim the new exec may have been promoted earlier this month.

New graph shows immediate impact of iPad

Site default logo image

Silicon Alley Insider’s chart using yesterday’s Apple revenue numbers shows the iPad having an immediate impact on Apple’s product matrix:

Tim Cook yesterday said that the iPad adoption was phenomenal and that the iPad wasn’t following a traditional early adopter model.

Though, iPhone numbers, including the 1.7 million iPhone 4s last quarter, are down slightly for a second consecutive quarter.
