iPhone 18 Pro 5G via satellite rumor gets new support

iPhone 18 Pro 5G via satellite rumor gets new support | NASA satellite photo

Apple is believed to be on a gradual journey that began with Emergency SOS via Satellite on the iPhone 14 back in 2022 and will at some point progress to full 5G access via satellite, bypassing ground-based antenna altogether.

It’s previously been suggested that the iPhone 18 Pro might take a significant step in this direction with support for 5G over satellite links. A new report today adds weight to that idea …

iPhone 18 Pro: These rumored camera upgrades could launch later this year

While iPhone Fold is certainly the more interesting iPhone launching this fall, the iPhone 18 Pro will always be important for one reason: cameras. iPhone Fold won’t be able to pack a flagship camera experience, so if that’s something you’re after, you’ll have to settle for the “boring” iPhone 18 Pro.

Despite looking similar on the outside though, there’ll be a number of interesting camera upgrades to look forward to.

Leaker makes unlikely claim about improved iPhone 18 telephoto performance | Close-up of iPhone 17 Pro camera module

A leaker better known for posting about Android smartphones has made a claim potentially pointing to improved telephoto performance in the iPhone 18 lineup.

The combination of the vagueness of the report and the rather unlikely nature of it means there’s probably nothing to the claim, but we note it just in case there is some element of truth behind it …

iPhone 18 Pro Dynamic Island confusion now appears to be resolved | Render showing selfie camera top left with a giant 'Nope' overlaid

There’s been considerable confusion about the fate of the iPhone 18 Pro Dynamic Island, with conflicting claims about the position of the selfie camera, the visibility of the Face ID components, and the size and location of the Dynamic Island.

iPhone 18 Pro selfie camera and Dynamic Island may be positioned on the left

iPhone 18 Pro selfie camera and Dynamic Island may be positioned top-left (render shown)

One of the biggest visual changes we’re expecting with this year’s iPhone 18 Pro is a punch-hole selfie camera, with the Face ID module invisibly embedded into the display.

Until recently, we’d been expecting this to be centered in the same way as the current camera and Face ID module. However, one report has suggested that the punch-hole selfie camera would instead be relocated to the top-left corner, where the clock currently lives. If so, logically the Dynamic Island would move with it, and this is shown in a new video render …

A leaker with a decent track record suggests that the company is going to fix that problem in next year’s lineup …

Supply chain report corroborates iPhone 18 Pro variable aperture camera | Shallow depth of field photo of an iPhone camera module

Apple has long been rumored to be working on a significant improvement to the main iPhone camera in the form of a variable aperture lens. Some reports claimed that this would be introduced in the iPhone 17, but this of course didn’t happen.

Ming-Chi Kuo first reported plans to introduce the feature in the iPhone 18, and this has now been corroborated by a supply chain report which says that work is already underway on the new hardware …

Next year may see the most fragmented iPhone line-up ever

Next year may see the most fragmented iPhone line-up ever | Abstract image of rounded, colourful rectangles

Once upon a time, there was just a single iPhone. Today, things are rather more complicated, with a choice of four new models plus two older ones remaining on sale directly from Apple.

Next year may see the most fragmented iPhone lineup we have ever seen in the company’s history – and that could be bad news for some of us …
