Amazon won’t charge extra for 4K content on Prime Instant Video

(Update: We may have gotten a bit too excited about this announcement. While Amazon hasn’t officially commented on the matter, you’ll likely need a UHDTV with HEVC decoding to watch Amazon’s 4K offerings.)

Its been said before, but 4K may finally be on the cusp of breaking through. Ultra high-definition TVs from major brands are dropping like crazy and Apple pushed out a 5K iMac just a few months ago. The hardware is there, but the content from a pricing and availability perspective is still lagging behind.

We took a step in the right direction when Netflix began offering 4K content, but quickly took a step back once we found out it came with strings attached.

Fast forward to this week. Amazon has promised there will not be any additional fees for Prime members for streaming 4K content. Before the end of this year anyone with a Prime account and a UHD display/TV will be able to gaze at Alpha House in beautiful 4K without forking over any additional cash. Selection will be extremely limited and filled with Amazon exclusives at first, but more titles will be continually added.

Of course, access to streaming 4K content is in addition to other Prime benefits like free 2-day shipping and unlimited photo storage. Sign up for a free Prime trial or student account.

Walmart’s Black Friday Apple deals revealed: iPad mini w/ $30 GC $199, iPad Air w/ $100 GC $397, much more

From 9to5Toys.com:

It is definitely November. Three days in a row we’ve shared different blockbuster Black Friday ads: Monday was Target, yesterday was Best Buy, and now we have Walmart.

Walmart’s holiday deals often standout from a pricing and spectacle perspective. As seen in the lead image for this article, Walmart is planning three separate sales events for Black Friday 2014: November 28th 6am (event 3), November 27th 8pm (event 2), November 27th 6pm (event 1). Each event will ring in new deals that will last one to two days or until supplies are exhausted. See banner above for specifics.

Once again, Walmart stores will offer a 1-hour guarantee on select products, which means Walmart is promising that you’ll get your deal of choice by Christmas as long as your purchase is processed between 6-7pm on Thursday.

Enough with logistics, it’s time to explore the best Walmart Black Friday Apple deals for 2014:

How to Fix Safari Push Notifications in Yosemite

If you’ve visited any of the 9to5 sites in Safari on OS X 10.9 Mavericks or 10.10 Yosemite since early 2014, you may have opted into website push notifications. Powered by PushUp Notifications, which integrates closely with WordPress, 9to5mac alone has over 400,000 subscribers receiving breaking Apple news the moment a hot story is published. On a busy news day, we’re delivering over 2 million unique notifications.

Unfortunately, the underlying Safari Push Notifications service on Apple’s end has some bugs on OS X 10.10 Yosemite. PushUp is reporting that many Yosemite users intermittently lose connectivity to APNS on a per site basis (the bug does not present in Mavericks). The bug has been reported to Apple, and appears to be confirmed by a few sources. The beta builds of 10.10.1 highlight Notification Center as an area of focus, although a fix is not definitively confirmed yet.

In the mean time, if you haven’t seen any 9to5 notifications for a while, and you’re already subscribed, there’s an easy fix.

Mount your iPhone 6 inside any car with Logitech’s new Protection+ case

The overhauled design of iPhone 6 has slowed third party accessory makers to a crawl. We’ve seen a variety of docks and ultra-thin cases from smaller outfits, but name-brand companies are taking an exceptionally long time to bring iPhone 6/Plus accessories to market. Originally released for the iPhone 5/5s, Logitech has retooled its Protection+ case for iPhone 6:

Protection+ for iPhone 6 uses shock-absorbent polymers in each of the corners of the case to better absorb the the force of drops and bumps. This corner protection along with an inner TPR layer and impact channels (seen along the backside), work together to offer military-grade drop protection.

But it’s more than just a protective case. There’s a built-in metal plate on the rear of the case that enables Protection+ to seamlessly integrate with Logitech+ magnetic mounts. We had a chance to use a similar magnetic mount during our Case+ review and found that it provided a rock-solid connection.

The iPhone 6 Protection+ case is now available preorder in four different color combinations for $34.99. So far there’s no word on whether or not an iPhone 6 Plus version is in the pipeline, but don’t fret because we’ve already tracked down a couple compatible mounts. All of our other favorite iPhone 6/Plus cases can be found in this roundup.

Full announcement:

Today we’re excited to introduce the newest addition to our lineup of stylish and protective smartphone accessories, the Logitech protection [+] for iPhone 6. Featuring aslim, yet ultra-protective, outer shell, shock-absorbent corners and flexible impact channels, this case shields your smartphone from whatever the world throws at it. It’s wrapped in a soft-touch finish that feels great in your hand, and comes in four colors: gunmetal black, pacific blue, scarlet plum and winter white.

To help minimize the force of impact from bumps and drops, the Logitech protection [+] case embeds shock-absorbent polymers in all four corners of the case and features flexible impact channels. Its raised bezel also helps guard your screen’s sensitive surface. And for added assurance, the Logitech protection [+] case meets the U.S. Military drop-test standard (MIL-STD 810 G) for “rugged” devices, protecting your phone from drops up to 1.2 meters high.

Additionally, the case has a built-in hidden metal plate that enables seamless connection to all Logitech smartphone mounts, including the +trip air vent mount and +drive windshield/dashboard mount for easy one-touch mounting in the car.
