Apple unveiled all new new versions of its iWork productivity apps: Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. Today’s software updates are most notable as iWork previously hasn’t received an update since 2009, save for iCloud support and bug fixes.

Starting with the icons, Apple redesigned its iWork applications to be more familiar across devices and supports better file compatibility. Both versions on iOS and OS X previously featured heavy elements of linen, leather, and wood, all of which are now absent.

Keynote now includes new transitions between slides, something Eddy Cue bragged were being used during the keynote.

iWork for iCloud now supports collaboration, a feature widely requested and supported by Google Docs for quite some time. Sharing documents across devices is much easier now with support for URLs in emails or messages. Notably, support from iWork in iCloud means these apps are available in a browser for PC users as well.

iWork for Mac and iOS are now available free for new devices and available today. (Full press release below)

  4. The updates do have one drawback for those of us using it on OSX and iOS: when you open a file created with iWorks 2009 on an iOS device, you see this message: “Your document will open on the new Pages for iOS. To open it on a Mac, you’ll need to install the latest Pages on OS X Mavericks.” The new Pages is not available for Mountain Lion (as far as I’ve been able to determine so far). And for work reasons, I cannot upgrade to Mavericks for several weeks (on travel; need to be able to archive data first), making my iOS hardware unusable for docs that I need to also see on my Mac. Anyone else have this issue?

It looks like either Apple changed its mind (or fixed a bug) .. because as of this morning, if you have Pages, Numbers, and/or Keynote on your Mac hard drive – no matter where/when you bought it .. you are given the opportunity to download/install the free update from the Mac App Store.

When I heard that iWork will be free for any new device and after upgrading to Maverics I was quite happy to hear that. Now that I have upgraded and looking into the App Store I’m shocked that they still want money from me.

Guys my Mac is just less than 2 month old, wouldn’t it be fair if I had the chance to get iWork for free too? I have iLife already (because it was on my Mac when I bought it) so why not iWork?
On iCloud the version of iWork is still in Beta, missing some key features like creating tables in Pages.

My only hope left is to get it free for my desktop when I get my iPhone 5S later this week, otherwise I will stick with LibreOffice because I will not pay anything for iWork.
