Apple says iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set overnight preorder sales record

In a statement to Re/code, Apple has announced that iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have set new records for overnight preorders.

An Apple representative said that the overnight sales of the new iPhones set a record, though Apple did not say how many have been sold.

“Response to iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus has been incredible with a record number of preorders overnight,” Apple told Re/code.

Earlier today, AT&T announced that it saw the best iPhone demand in two years. The phones have received immense interest today, despite Apple Online Store issues. T-Mobile’s systems have been crunched due to the demand, meaning sales representatives have had to resort to pen and paper to reserve iPhones for customers.

As posted earlier, the iPhone 6 Plus is sold out universally with Apple quoting 3 – 4 weeks shipping estimates. Reports leading up to the event had indicated that 6 Plus supply would be constrained, and these concerns have been realized. The iPhone 6 (the 4.7 inch model) remains generally well-stocked. However, Apple is clearly ready to set another first-weekend iPhone sales record. Last year, Apple reported 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c sold in the first three days of availability.

If the performance of 6 & 6+ is the same, I bet 6 will not be beaten by 6+. I ordered 6+ only for its battery life/ optical stability & horizontal mode. I prefer the size of 4.7…5.5 is too large for my pocket.

  6. Ummm…2 year upgrade cycles because of contracts. If the carriers want to see this every year, they should get rid of stupid contracts. That means you too T-Mobile. Don’t think we believe your “no contract” plans aren’t really contract plans in disguise…

    • Ron Miller - 10 years ago

2yr means nothing anymore I’m att and i upgrade every 12 months plus iPhone users will pay for there phones out right if they have to crappy samsung just has not figured it out yet they keep changing there hardware every 3 weeks its about the software thats why you could put the iPhone in a shit box and we would buy it why because it works flawlessly screw that android crap!!

      • Cun Con - 10 years ago

Punctuation needed…I lost my breath reading your comment, dude.

      • Klaus Dietrich Lange - 10 years ago

Two years means nothing anymore. I’m with AT&T and I upgrade every 12 months. Besides iPhone users will pay for their phones outright if they have to. Crappy Samsung has just not figured it out yet. They keep changing their hardware every 3 weeks but it´s about the software. Thats why you could put the iPhone in a shit box and we would buy it. Why ? Because it works flawlessly. Screw that Android crap!!

    • With T-Mobile you pay full price for the phone… They are off contract but you have to be willing to spend $650+ in one shot instead of over 12 or 24 months like people like to do.

Personally I buy them in cash and sell them to every year, I always get at least $300 for my trade in so my version of the “Next” plans only costs my $29 a month over 12 months instead of $30+ over 20 months and I don’t have to deal with contracts.

The two year cycles are continuously overlapping. Not everybody orders a new phone on the same day or even the same year. Remember that there are new phones out every year so every year is the beginning and end of a two-year cycle

I have a 4s and this year i’m pleased with the iPhone 6. The iPhone 5/5s wasn’t a major upgrade to me.

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Going from a 4S, there are more new features in the 6 that came from the 5/5s than those that brand new.

  9. theagentmike - 10 years ago

Missed the opportunity to order late last night because the Apple Store site was down.. Now gotta wait a month or longer to get my 6 Plus. Damn.

    • Michael Zaplatosch - 10 years ago

Don’t feel bad, 8 minutes after midnight my ATT 128gb 6 Plus yielded me a 21-28 day delivery time from AT&T website. Look at it this way you got more sleep than me, with the same delivery time. I am hoping this is changed when we get closer.

      • Jason Yap - 10 years ago

I ordered my wife and my iPhone plus 64gb literally seconds after each other but hers is gold and is scheduled 10/13-10/22. My silver is scheduled 10/31-11/11! I really hope this isn’t the case and just a really bad over estimate.

Does anyone else start pre orders? I’m in the same boat coming from a half working iPhone 4 I need this asap

      • nivekshato - 10 years ago

I preordered through att, and in my confirmation email it’s saying I’m
Not getting my phone till October 31…something is seriously wrong, I’d just wait

  10. Laughing_Boy48 - 10 years ago

Not really. Apple is lying about it to hype the iPhone. That’s what the Droidboyz always say.

Samsung, prepare to get your ass kicked in high-end smartphone sales.

    • Cun Con - 10 years ago

Samsung already got kicked in high-end smartphone sales. This time is phablet market. Damn, Apple is cleaning up all the profits.

Great LA Times article mentions how Apple fudges the numbers, and counts phones sitting on the shelves as sold.

A must read for any true Apple fan.

It also asks “what’s the point” of its watch.

    • password92 - 10 years ago

Do you really think the average iPhone user goes around bragging about how much Apple sells? One could ask what is the point of your post?

    • :D:D:D You’re so naive and don’t see into anything.

    • johnmfoley (@johnmfoley) - 10 years ago

This board is for true Apple fans so why don’t you get off?

There are legitimate things about Apple you can complain about (e.g. ecosystem lock-in, lack of clarity of future plans so that consumers can make best buying decisions), but these articles are so flawed. At least for the tablet market Apple was the only company not counting iPads sitting on the shelves as sold. Even if it’s true for iPhones, let’s be honest, new iPhones don’t sit on shelves the first month. They constantly sell out. How is that fudging numbers? It’s more fudging numbers when Samsung, Windows or Amazon do it (and they do) for phones that won’t sell for months if ever. Btw, there are other factors at play whether they should count them as sold or not like whether the retailer can return them to Apple or if essentially the retailer bought them and now either has to sell them or take it as a loss.

Wow the ‘great’ LA Times is really anti-Apple. “What’s the point” of the LA Times? Just saw another article about how Apple botched the pre-order process… There is so much wrong with that one.

    • samuelsnay - 10 years ago

It’s called counting units shipped instead of sellthru. Which you should know all about because your butt buddies at Samsung have been guilty of this since day one.

Also, isn’t the LA Times one of the many news outlets who asked “what’s the point” about the first iPad when it was first revealed? Yeah, how’d that turn out?

    • nsxrebel - 10 years ago

You’re confusing Apple with Samsuck. Samsung is the one that lies and fudges numbers, they count shipped phones to vendors as sales, when a lot of their inventory is sitting on shelves.

  13. Drew (@gettysburg11s) - 10 years ago

Well, the iPhone 6 IS starting to show 7-10 business days for some carriers and capacities. I bet it will sell out by the end of the weekend in all but 128 GB sizes.

    • Charles Blackmon - 10 years ago

actually the 128 GB is very popular, I just got of the phone with a Tmobile rep and she said everyone is mostly ordering the 6 plus in 128 GB next is the 6 plus in 64 GB

  14. 89p13 - 10 years ago

That and “Gee, the morning followed the night.” Will the strangeness never stop?

  15. Joel Henson - 10 years ago

they could add one more to that number if Tmobile would get their crap together

  16. Jay Imerman - 10 years ago

@Andy Grant, you say “Duh” but it’s not so obvious to non-fanboys. Especially Wall Street, the stock usually dips after a new release, but it has only gone up today. Add mine to the early preorders, they said it will be here by next Friday! As I argue on my blog post, anyone who is concerned about credit/debit card security and identity theft should jump to Apple Pay (and thus the iPhone 6-6plus).

  17. jrox16 - 10 years ago

    APPLE IS DOOMED

  18. Here come the sSheep (Samsung fanboys) saying that Samsung shipped 500 million units in a month.

  19. Seth Geib - 10 years ago

“In a statement to Re/code, Apple has announced that iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 S Plus have set new records for overnight preorders.”

You should make a correction here, since there is no “iPhone 6 S Plus.”

    Reblogged this on TheCanadianTechie.

  21. Am I the only person with a 6+ 128 that’s being delivered on the 19th?

    • roymarroquin2011 - 10 years ago

No I got both of mine
The 6 /64 gig space gray
      The 6+ /128 gig gold :)

Woohoo!! I bought one through apple with express pay
And the other one by calling tmobile at 5:54 Am ! Had a one minute hold time then the girl was being very slow and I told her I just wanted to get the iPhone 6 or I would switch service lol

    • Derrick Miller - 10 years ago

Apparently so. I was online exactly at 3am and had my credit card being authorized for my 6Plus at 3:03 when the system went down. I was able to get back in 45 minutes later and now my ship date is mid-October. I wonder if sitting in line on Friday will do any good? AT&T said that if I can get one from Apple then they will cancel my pre-order. Something to think about.

Samsung is probably drooling and peeing in the pants at the same time now.

  25. Paul Neumann - 10 years ago

“Set new records”. Redundant. If it’s a record, of course it’s new. Journalism 101.

  26. dridots - 10 years ago

Apple and AT&T are a bunch of incompitsnt idiots. They knew there was going to be a huge amount of people ordering phones and they failed

  27. Shawn Campbell - 10 years ago

Anybody get their damn pre-ordered 6 plus yet?
