Nearly two weeks after customers first got their hands on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, Apple has updated its Apple Store app to support the larger 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes. The release notes add that version 3.0.1 includes an “iOS compatibility update” as well.
The app previously received a major overhaul ahead of the iPhone introduction bringing a single app that works on both iPhone and iPad, a new icon, and features for synchronizing shopping.
The Apple Store app for iPhone is available for free on the App Store.

Alright. That makes…I think….3 total Apps I have from the App Store, that have actually been updated for the new displays.
I get the impression that Apple have been harping on about scaling displays (a la Android) in apps for a while, but no-one saw the reason to put in dozens of extra work hours because Apple, of course, never told them why. Then iPhone 6 and 6 Plus came out, and all the in-house teams are now running around in a panic trying to redesign their apps… which if you were lazy before takes time.
Meanwhile, all the contractors and agencies are at a loss as to how to convince clients (whose CEOs don’t own a 6 Plus…) to pony up several grand or more for no benefit on any iOS device except the latest – after all, it’s not like the apps are broken, they’re just a bit big. Even my boss, who could sell water to a fish, would have issues convincing clients who weren’t sensitive to these things like everyone on 9to5Mac is. (These were the same people who didn’t care that iPhone 5 had a letterboxing problem, but that was slightly easier/cheaper to fix ’cause it just needed some new graphics.)
The wheels will turn and most apps worth a damn will be updated eventually – but this is a classic case of early adopterism not giving the best experience to start with.
Good news.
Where did my free app/book of the month go?
It’s “of the week” (not “of the month”), but it should be there: Right now the App Store shows “Whac-A-Mole” as the free app of the week, and “Breaking Rules” as the free book of the week.
They used to give out a freebie (typically one per month) within the Apple Store app before the redesign, not just the App Store…
