Report: Phablet market quadrupled in Q1 with iPhone 6 Plus grabbing 44% of the market

So-called phablets just about quadrupled their marketshare during Q1 of this year thanks largely due to Apple’s first product in the category, the iPhone 6 Plus.

The data comes from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech and shows the phablet market grew to 21% in the first quarter this year, up from just 6% last year. The growth is mostly due to the iPhone 6 Plus, which grabbed 44% of the market during Q1.

Apple iPhone 6 Plus took 44% of this segment. Screen size was cited as the main reason for buying a particular phone by both iOS and Android buyers at 43% and 47%, respectively.

Kantar adds that during the quarter, its data shows that around 11.4% of users switched from Android (vs 14.6% last year). That compares to only 5.9% switching from iOS to Android, down from 9.8% in the year ago quarter. As for smartphone sales in general: “Apple’s overall sales dominated AT&T, Verizon and Sprint where iPhone represented 59%, 43% and 50% of smartphone sales, while Samsung dominated smartphone sales at T-Mobile with a share of 42%.”

Kantar also provided stats today on the growth of iOS during Q1, noting Android switchers drove iPhone growth across EU in Q1 as Apple grew to 26% share in urban China.

  1. Im part of that statistic… funny how so many people judged me for getting “such a large phone” and now tell me they regret have chosen the “smaller” version.

    • I just can’t handle them, I still think the 5 was the ideal size, I know, most people won’t agree with me. But it is one of the tidiest sized designs. I am enjoying the 6, but a 6 Plus reminds me of Dom Jolly from trigger happy TV, “HELLOOOOO, YEAH, I’M IN THE CINEMA!”

So, why is Wall Street so freaking hung up on declining iPad sales? I’m sure most companies can’t sell every product in their lineup equally well. I would think it benefits Apple more to sell its larger iPhone than their iPads from a profit margin standpoint. I see it as a winning situation, but Wall Street only sees it as a losing proposition as though the iPad market is weakened because Apple is doing something wrong. I think it would be almost impossible for Apple to sell high numbers of iPhones and iPads simultaneously especially when many consumers already have older iPads. I can’t imagine how Apple is going to be able to create a whole new tablet market with increased growth.

Because Wall St. wants you to sell while they are buying and wants you to buy when they are selling. Of course Apple’s Phablet sales are better than iPad Mini sales. The 6 Plus is also a tablet. So the “secret” is that Apple’s tablet sales are actually increasing. Analysts will discover this “secret” after they have bought up to their risk limit.

At this rate, we’ll have TV size Mobiles, before you know it. Shades of Ghetto Blasters. What happened to that shrunken phone that would fit in your pocket?

I may bump up to the plus size when the “s” models, or whatever they will call them, come out this year.

Remember when EVERY tech blog writer guffawed and giggled over the ridiculous idea that anyone would want one?
The tech-o-blog-o-sphere has always been a echo chamber that loves to smell each other’s farts.

They did this because Apple led the charge of laughing at large phones…that is, until they found out people actually want them and they started losing traction because of how toy-like their phones were.

Actually they felt that display technology wasn’t up to their standards. Now that they are. If you recall, the competing Phablets had horrible displays that were compromised in many ways.

The original Galaxy Note, Note 2, and Note 3 had amazing displays, and all came out before the iphone 6 plus.

I got my 64 GB iPhone 6 at an excellent price through Virgin in Canada. It’s a fantastic device and the main reason I’m not interested in an Apple Watch; after switching to such a gloriously large screen, buying into something a quarter of its size isn’t of interest.

Once the 7 lands, I’ll invest in the 7 Plus, without question. I’m hooked on the large screen experience.

Possibly backing up apple’s argument that iPad sales are down because of encroachment by larger iPhone?
