There’s one more app joining Apple’s small list of road-ready apps for the car today as MLB At Bat for iPhone has been updated with CarPlay support. MLB At Bat version 8.2 adds its own CarPlay interface for iPhone users with supported in-dash receivers in the car. The app’s game audio streaming is expected to be the focus of the CarPlay version, although the menu has been empty for me in testing as no games are currently being played until this evening.
The baseball-focused app follows recent audiobook service additions from Auidobooks.com and Audible while iOS 8.4 will add audiobooks from iBooks.
MLB At Bat has long been listed as a supported CarPlay app on Apple’s website, but today’s update is the first version to actually put MLB At Bat on the CarPlay home screen. MLB At Bat is available as a free app on the App Store with At Bat Premium available as a in-app subscription purchase. Here’s the full change log of the latest version:
What’s New in Version 8.2.0
• Share video highlights directly from the media player interface
• Support for Car Play (iPhone only)
• Embedded tweets, GIFs and photos available in news articles

Updated app on my iPhone, went out to truck (Alpine ILX-007 installed), fired up the app, aaaand: nothing… maybe stuff shows up when actual games are on, but if that’s a case, giving the user *NOTHING* is a terrible idea no matter what… picture: https://twitter.com/MorningZ/status/603262231707521025
Same here. We’ll see when a game goes live in 5 hours or so. Agree.
Would you recommend the Alpine ILX-007? I’ve been interested in an aftermarket solution, but not sure which is the best option out there!
I’d be happy to find an aftermarket option that didn’t cost more than my iPhone MSRP. How many people are dropping $900 for a carplay system?
I like it a lot… there are issues with it, like any first gen product. For instance Spotify has some issues, but the (easy) work around is to start Spotify and play music *before* plugging the phone into the radio. Lots of good (and bad) feedback on Crutchfield’s page for the unit
Cool will take a look, thanks!
I can’t figure out of this is a plus or a minus. Is MLB still popular?
At Bat stood atop the app store rankings in the U.S. and Canada as the highest grossing sports app on both iPhone and iPad. Buoyed by its new bilingual offering in 2015, At Bat also achieved similar top rankings among sports apps in Mexico. MLB’s rev has been rising faster than NFL’s, and is now 9 billion to NFL’s 10….so, I guess its still fairly popular – ha!!
And update on app usage: I went out last night about 6:50 pm and games were being listed, clicking on the items didn’t do anything AND to boot all games were not listed (like Red Sox @ Twins that played last night wasn’t listed)… Come on MLB, you are supposed to be good at writing apps, this release is half-baked (at best)
