Vidyo app allows you to record your iOS device’s screen without jailbreaking

It may not be available for long, but a new screen recording utility has appeared on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. The app, called Vidyo, costs $4.99 and allows users to record their device’s display by simulating an AirPlay Mirroring connection (via MacStories).

Because Viydo simulates an AirPlay Mirroring connection to itself, you are able to record your screen no matter where you go in iOS, including the homescreen and other first and third party apps. It’s relatively easy to work, but it’s definitely a workaround, which is probably how it made it past Apple’s app review team in the first place. To record your display, first go into the Vidyo app, enable the “device capture” setting and exit the app. Then swipe up to access Control Center and choose Vidyo as an AirPlay source.

The app can record in a resolution up to 1080p at 60fps. Audio can also be recorded from your iOS device’s microphone. There are built-in tools for post processing as well, including adding background audio, such as music or commentary. You can also trim clips and merge multiple clips together.  Finished videos can be exported to the Camera Roll or shared to online services.

Screen capture functionality is a feature that many iOS users have wished for from the beginning, and one that Apple has always refused to add or allow in the App Store. It’s likely that Vidyo will get removed sooner rather than later, but in the meantime it’s available on the App Store for $4.99.

Vidyo is the ultimate solution to capturing your screen, device audio or in fact any capture input available on your device (eg. camera, mic).

Vidyo captures your entire screen, and/or ALL audio on your device, and even allows you to add commentary and finalise your video all on your device – no computer required. Ideal for uploading directly to video sites such as YouTube.

Vidyo lets you take videos from the camera, record sound from your microphone, or use video or voice already on your device; and then trim, combine/mix and edit these into one final file.

– Capture your device screen no matter which app you are in.
– Capture your device audio (anything that comes out of the speakers) in full original quality.
– Capture from the Microphone, Camera or any other available media input on your device.
– Add background music or commentary to existing videos with full control of mixing volumes.
– Capture new videos and trim them before uploading to online media sites. (on board camera and any other connected and compatible video source)
– Unique new trim control to help you trim audio files with precision.
– Record and manage all your media files from one place.

Only problem is that I pay $4.99 for something that might potentially be yanked off the App Store. Would have been nice if it were OSS, and there was an option for donations.

After reading the reviews I wouldn’t pay for it. It looks like a con to be honest. If you want a screen recorder that’s proven to work for none jail broken devices and is free as well you should just use (airshou).

I brought it. And works perfectly

Indeed it works great. A little fiddly at the moment when trying to ensure you record in landscape – but the developer is working on a fix.

You can even record streaming TV and video / movies in some apps – anything that you can AirPlay (some apps work better than others).

Shou seems to be removed from App Store. Currently, I’m using Apowersoft iPhone/iPad Recorder. So far, it works well.

Or you could use QuickTime Player for free, or pay for ScreenFlow. Which also has the ability to do it.

QuickTime is indeed great, but now I can record on the go, without being cabled to my Mac.

Also you can’t record streaming video in many apps with QuickTime, s copyright protection thing – but this uses AirPlay and seems to get round that with many apps.

The fact that this is a paid app leads me to think 9to5 got money to write such an article… Too expensive anyway.

Also likely this is a trademark violation: There is an unrelated videoconferencing company called Vidyo. http://www.vidyo.com
I can’t imagine they are happy about this.

If you can simply use QuickTime on your Mac with your connected iPhone or iPad to capture the screen video, why bother to pay $4.99?

    • phirst - 9 years ago

Great to be able to record on the go now – and you can record some streaming video with some apps, which QuickTime seems to prevent.

What?Taken off from app store? That fast?I just bought one in the morning, looks like buggy as I could not play back the video I captured and not seen them in my photo/video app.Can I ask for a refund?

The point is being able to capture your screen on your iOS device saves you having to plug it into your mac a lot of folks now use an iPad as their main device which is much more convenient. The app works perfectly and does exactly as it says on the tin.

  9. Not available in my country :..( take my money!

  10. phirst - 9 years ago

It’s gone from the App Store – not surprising really, as you can record streaming HD video/TV/Movies from most apps that AirPlay – a major copyright issue!

Still, I’m glad I’ve got it before it was pulled, running OK, if a little fiddly to ensure landscape recording. No updates though ;-(

Wonder how long it will work before Apple kill its functionality?

I give up struggling to look for iOS screen recording app, Apple won’t approve for it. Currently, I’m using a desktop app call acethinker iphone screen recorder that mirrors my iPhone screen to the computer and use its screen recording function to make videos. It’s not that direct, but it works.
